Opening weekend

So far it seems this movie will open somewhere in the 30M-45M range. I don't care that much about if the main cast is male, female, or mixed, black, white, straight gay whatever, but seeing portals calling this "great", "big" really makes me want this movie to fail.

I'm not sure who asked for this remake, if it was 10 years ago when the Ocean's franchise was kinda relevant then okay let's make a female version of the same. Ocean's 11 was a great movie, 12 decent but pointless given its plot, 13 was a well deserved flop. The cast of Ocean's 8 seems interesting though they surely aren't of the same caliber as the folks from Ocean's 11. Aside Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett (and to lesser extent HBC and Anne Hattaway) the rest of the cast is laughable. Rihanna? Who is Awkwafina?

reply

It’s failure will be blamed on MEN whom they can’t force to go watch it.

As if they COULD.

Why would we men wanna see a chick flick?

We could care less to see frickin’ Rihanna in a movie.

We already laughed at Battleship, for sh*t’s sake.

reply

There are some good chick flicks out there. Go watch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Not sure Oceans 8 fits the classical definition of "chick flick" though. It's just a heist film with a mostly female cast.

reply

And...why the f*ck would I wanna see “How to lose a Guy in 10 days”?

Go ahead...pitch it...

reply

LOL, because it's fucking entertaining.

It blends humor, good character moments, and a charming love story together to create a movie that should appeal to both sexes.

Plus, Kate Hudson looks fantastic.

I don't think I've talked to anyone whose seen it who didn't like it.

reply

No offense...but I don’t give a Flying frog’s fat arse what “cute” girl is in a movie. If it’s audience is intended to be women...

...why would men see it?

Bear in mind, my fave films are period films but this Ocean’s film is no such film.

reply

Frankly, and as you say no offense, I think your attitude is probably one I held when I was 14-years-old. But as I got older I expanded my appreciation for various kinds of films.

A well-told story is a well-told story. Take something like When Harry Met Sally, for instance. It is, by all definitions, a chick flick. But it's also regarded as a classic film, by both men and women alike. Right now it sits at an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and the critical industry is one that is dominated by men.

I'd just say considering giving more films a chance than just whatever it is that you usually watch. You might be surprised.

reply

Lemme put it to you this way:

The only chick flicks I ever enjoyed were the Jane Austen adaptations.

But...

Do I wanna see a lameass MALE versión of them?

No.

Same goes for a pathetic attempt to piggyback onto the success of a former GUY flick for the sake of political correctness.

That is the WRONG reason to make a film and the Ghostbusters retards found that out the HARD way.

But hey...live and learn.

reply

Out of curiosity, do you enjoy any female-lead action movies?

Aliens, Underworld, Atomic Blonde, Lucy, the Resident Evil series, Salt, Wonder Woman, Hanna, The Long Kiss Goodnight, etc?

reply

Grew up in the ‘70s...Alien and Aliens is my generation.

Wonder Woman is a vast improvement over the Lynda Carter days.

But a lameass feminized Oceans film is not an “action” film to me.

reply

I don't think the trailer looks particularly good but not because it's a female cast, more just because the story looks pretty paint-by-numbers.

I intend to see it though and give it an honest chance.

reply

Good choice of words.

It IS paint-by-numbers.

Which is lame as shit.

reply

Bridesmaids was great, and it's a chick flick. Nothing wrong with a good chick flick, and I like looking at chicks too, so there is that.

reply

Seems like a silly reason to want the movie to fail.

What about the people who worked hard to make the film? Why should they suffer because "a few portals" wrote some articles you didn't like? The writers, the director, the actors, the producers, etc should all lose and have their career's damaged because of that?

In any case, I intend to see the movie but I don't have high expectations. The first Oceans 11 is a classic. Oceans 12 was disappointing. Oceans 13 was fairly good.

This one doesn't look particularly good but I'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised.

reply

Maybe Hollywood found this female-empowerment movement as a good chance to have an excuse for a remake-reboot, God knows the last few years it's all about franchises, sequels, prequels, spin-offs. I don't mind who acts or directs a movie, if the story is interesting enough and well written I'm all for it. But calling 30-40M OW big, I'm sorry that's not big. It's decent at best, there were bunch of movies that had smaller budget than Ocean's 8 and managed to pull bigger numbers, like Quiet Place. A movie shouldn't be pampered just because it's a female-lead flick.

reply

Clooney's Ocean's 11 made 38 million its opening weekend, on an 85 million budget. Oceans 8 is estimated for a very close opening at a budget of 70 million. That's pretty good to pull the same opening.

Nobody is saying what you claim. Nobody is claiming it's this huge opening or acting like it's the biggest ever. It's being called a good opening, a successful opening. You're exaggerating completely.

reply

Since you don't seem to know Clooney's Ocean's 11 ended up earning 183M domestically. That's almost a 6X multiplier. Nowadays it's almost impossible for a big movie to get that big of a multiplier, it's usually 2.5-4X its OW. If Ocean's 8 opens with 40M the question is if it will reach 100M given its competition. We're living in a different times than 17 years ago so it's not fair comparing Ocean's 11 OW with what will Ocean's 8 potentially make. No way Ocean's 8 will get to 183M even if it opens a few millions over what Ocean's 11 did.

Also try not assuming what I know, because you make an a** out of yourself. Maybe it seems like an obscure fact but I'm sure most of movie watching audience (me included) knows Clooney's Ocean's 11 was a remake. But unlike Ocean's 8 it wasn't produced in a time when it was politically correct to be made. Maybe Ocean's 8 is a good movie, but you can't argue with its timing, that's a fact.

reply

You're being such a hypocrite. So Oceans 11 is okay to remake, but a new movie in the series isn't because God forbid it has women now? Who honestly gives a fuck why it's being made if the quality is good? Do you not see how dumb your complaint is? Even if its only being made for political correctness or whatever everyone's whining about, if it's good, who cares? You're complaining and rooting for failure over nothing. Just looking for a reason to bitch about a movie that isn't even out yet.

This movie was announced like 3 years ago also. Before the times up and me too movements that have been going on. So pray tell, how is that a complaint? That it was being made before all the stuff happening currently? That's called a coincidence. I'm sure you'll pretend all these movements were happening 3 years ago, so I'll head you off and tell you no, they weren't.

reply

Remaking a movie that's 40 years old and all of its cast dead is one thing, remaking something that's 7 years old with all of its cast still alive and kicking and making films is another.

reply

So remakes or reboots should only be made decades later when the cast is dead? I guess you think The Dark Knight trilogy shouldn't exist. Clooney, Schwarzenegger, and Thurman are all still alive, so by your logic The Dark Knight trilogy is just as wrong as Oceans 8.

"All of its cast is still alive". Bernie Mac is dead.

"7 years old". Oceans 11 came out in 2001. How is that 7 years? Even Oceans 13 wasnt 7 years ago.

You're bitching over nothing. Complaining over nothing. Dont see it if you have such a problem with it, even if your complaints are pretty and pathetic.

reply

You suck at math. If your earlier statement is true than there was a 7 years gap between Ocean's 13 and Ocean's 8. It's simple math, well simple for most people.

reply

Oh, now you were judging when the movie was announced? Before you were judging when it was coming out. Look at that flip flopping!

Hmm, didn't even acknowledge The Dark Knight Trilogy being made even though all the cast of the previous batman movies were alive. What's the matter, afraid to admit your logic was dumb?

Also didn't admit Bernie Mac is dead. You said ALL the cast of Oceans 11 is alive. You say math is simple, but I'd say knowing the difference between a living person and a dead person is even easier....

reply

For Batman to get a new cast/director isn't anything new. There were Keaton, Clooney, Kilmer, 2-3 years between each of their iteration. This makes your logic dumb because it's not completely unexpected to cast a new actor. That's first of your "arguments".

Second, Bernie Mac. Clearly he died, that's unfortunate for all the obvious reasons. However he's one of 13 and I'm sure writers would manage to find a way out of that situation if the franchise wasn't where it was (profits and quality declining with every new Ocean movie). There were tons of movies that had lost even more important actors (with all due respect to Bernie Mac his character wasn't as important as say Danny or Rusty). Staying on topic, well whoopee doo for you for keeping track who isn't alive.

So when it suits your argument you'll say Ocean's 8 is from 2018, but when needed it's from 2015 right?Just asking so I know for future references :)

reply

Batman changing actors constantly wasnt new until Val Kilmer replaced Michael Keaton. Keaton was the first movie Batman since Adam West. Decades before. It was only because actors didnt want to return that they then needed to change them, but Keaton, Kilmer, and Clooney's Batmans were all apart of the same franchise. Then Nolan came along a few years later and made a whole new franchise. So again, by your logic, that's wrong since everyone from the previous franchise were still alive.

Ahhh but you see my friend, you said EVERY cast member from the Oceans movies are still alive. Bernie Mac is dead. He's been dead for years now. Which means, as usual, you were wrong.

You mean like you're constantly going back and forth? Because that's what you're doing. You've been claiming this movie is in response to the current movements repeatedly, but when called out that it was announced 3 years ago, you switch to "B-b-it's only been 7 years!!!!!". Which is it friend? Is your whining because it's coming out this year but has nothing to do with all the movements happening, or that it was announced 3 years ago? So hard to tell with your consent flip flopping. Let me know when you decide on which pathetic complaint suits you best :)

reply

My friend, you're the one going back and forth. It was you who first dated the Ocean's 8 movie to the year 2015. When it's convenient for you to defend its making as something not politically correct then it's 3 years old. But when you need it for a bigger gap between it and Ocean's 13 then it's from 2018. When you finally set on one date let me know so we can continue ;)

reply

Yes, that's exactly what you're doing sport. First you were screaming about the movie being in response to the current movements, but when called out that that's impossible, you changed your absurd co complaining to something else. You're just complaining to complain my boy. When you decide on what issue you have, let me know.

Also let me know when you learn the difference between living and dead :)

reply

I'll agree that a 6x multiplier is very unusual. Though it is a bit ironic that we're having this conversation right now after one of the most "leggy" box office performances I've ever seen.

The Greatest Showman opened with $14 million domestically over the 4-day Christmas weekend. It has gone on to make $174 million in the US.

I'm not saying Ocean's 8 will turn in a comparable performance, but hey, it happens sometimes.

reply

Who knows maybe Ocean's 8 outperforms all expectations, its competition isn't of the same genre but with Jurassic World2, Incredibles 2 coming their way and the current Deadpool2, Avengers3 and Solo to a lesser extent I don't think Ocean's8 will be so leggy. Do you know of there's some embargo on the reviews, this thing opens in a few days and there's zero reviews.

reply

Frankly, I don't think Ocean's 8 will be a huge hit. But who knows. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the same women who turned 50 Shades of Grey into a success also prop up Ocean's 8.

As for an embargo, not that I know of but that's a possibility. It doesn't seem like the kind of movie the studios would be scared of, though.

reply

50 shades was a chick flick. I do hope this won't turn out to be one too.

reply

I'm surprised this doesn't have at least 5 user ratings on IMDb, there are 108 reviews at the moment on Rotten Tomatoes yet probably zero user ratings on IMDb. There are always those users who are either rabid fans or ragging haters and will give a movie 1 or 10 stars rating. Yet we get crickets on IMDb and it's Friday. With any luck this will be the new trend on IMDb not just an anomaly.

reply

Who asked for Ocean's 11 when it came out? Since you don't seem to know, Clooney's Ocean's 11 was a remake. The original was made decades before. So again, who was asking for that to be remade? The answer: nobody. But the director and studio thought people would like it, and they did. It's the same for this movie.

And wanting it to fail is just pathetic. None of the cast are doing anything you're whining about.

reply

Where did I say the cast are doing anything? Try reading my post before replying, many thanks.

reply

I didnt say you said the cast did anything, but you're hoping the movie fails. My point was that's wrong since the cast isn't doing anything wrong. Again, didnt say you said they did. I'm saying its wrong to hope the movie fails and hurts people who did nothing. Try reading my post before replying, many thanks.

Also, interesting you ignore how Ocean's 11 is a remake nobody was asking for. Did you not read that too? Or did you not want to acknowledge it because it dismisses one of your complaints?

reply

I've replied to that comment of yours on your second comment. As for you not saying the cast did anything here's a quote of your initial post "None of the cast are doing anything you're whining about." Judging by that sentence it seems I was "whining" about something the cast has done. And nowhere did I say anything like that.
