Suspicions About Syd

So, I started my season rewatch and came to the part where Clark is interrogating David and mentions that Clockworks had no record of a Sydeny Barret there. I had totally forgotten about that and it just made all my suspicions about her come back. I suppose, after the finale, they could be unfounded, but...the explanations I can think of for him saying this are:
- She isn't real
- Syd isn't her real name
- Clark was lying about that to egg David on more
- Another one I just thought of is, Clockworks struck her from their records for whatever reason, but that's still just as suspicious

Aside from this one factoid, however there are a few other things about her character that bother me. How quickly they got into a relationship still bugs me, though I understand making the case for it considering what they've been through and how that could bond them. I've always felt like she was sent there, as a spy or informant some way. The way they met, hooked up, and moved on with it all just comes off, still, as awfully convenient to me. There's more, but I'll cut this short for the sake of your eyeballs.

Thoughts?
Forgive me starting threads anyways, though I anticipate activity here going down now, but there's too much on my mind about it, haha!

reply

I think Clark might have just been messing with David saying Syd didn't exist, BUT I am also suspicious about her and David's relationship developing so quickly. It just seemed odd that David would ask her to be his gf so quickly and they immediately fall in love. I was skeptical of her for a few episodes wondering if she was even real or was working for the bad guys.

reply

That's a really shitty thing for Clark to do, haha...he tries keeping him calm that whole time only to tinker in David's, already fragile, head? I don't know, I don't buy that for whatever reason. He's probably like the most tame out of the D3 people and the only one who didn't want to just exterminate David outright. After getting to know him more, I just think he's better/smarter than to do that, but I could be wrong!

The other big that that has gone unaddressed is WHY D3 was looking for Syd to begin with?! That seems like a huge thing to me. She must've done something substantial to get on their radar. They wanted her BAD too. I know, at some point, that was probably just to get at David more too since they probably surmised they were together, but...Clark was quite adamant about needing her and again I ask, why?

There's just always been something off about her, and I still feel like we'll get a big reveal with her (if not the entire Summerland team) eventually.

reply

Haha yes shitty Clark LOL.

reply

Ehhhh, I like Clark, I don't want to believe he's that shitty! I mean, sure, he did order all of David's loved ones to be murdered, but...ya know, dude did have half his body burned so. That humanizing opener, obviously worked very well on me, lol

I actually think, down the line, Clark and David will become something of friends or at least have a sort of frenemies relationship.

reply

I was just teasing you lol. I do like his character whether he's the bad guy or ends up helping David.

reply

I know you were πŸ˜‰ Anytime I think of him I automatically have his delivery of, "DAAAAVIIIID," echoing in my head, hahaha. It's a real good thing I don't know anyone in my life named David or that's how they'd hear it from me from now on, lol

I think he and David have the potential to have a really interesting dynamic. I really like that they fleshed (ouch, sorry Clark) him out and have brought him on board for next season.

reply

πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ». OMG for two days I've been randomly saying Daaavviddd like Clark does. hahahaha

reply

Hahaha, I can't not say it without that tone and elongation now, so thanks for that Legion! 😝

reply

Haha exactly. I think I might need to go watch it again 🀣

reply

I'm currently binging the whole season! I'm having separation issues, lol

reply

I feel your pain lol I can't get enough of this show!

reply

I've seen the show get some criticism for moving along too slowly, but watching it like this, it feels like the exact opposite. Watching some of them back to back, I've been surprised how quickly they got to certain plot points or character beats. There is still far more unexplained, but it is only the first season after all.

Also, I didn't get through the entire season again yet, but Chapter 5 remains my favorite still.

reply

I've heard those criticisms too and I think the show moved along just fine. I admit after the first episode I almost gave up because it seemed very strange and confusing but I watched it a coupe more times and I was hooked. Chapter 5 is amazing and I like Chapter 7 alot too.

reply

The show, up until the finale had tons of forward momentum, like a freight train! Even though the loose threads nag at me (as they are wont to do), I have to say after binging some, they did do a pretty decent job at getting the more superficial stuff answered...if that's the right word...I don't know, dishes? πŸ˜‹

Chapter 7 is stellar and in a lot of ways, I think was almost too good that it spoiled the finale for some viewers. Chapter 5 though, for whatever reason, holds a special place in my heart. I think it's the episode where everything kind of begins to pivot.

reply

Yes it's been a very intense season. I still liked the finale even though it was much slower paced. I feel the same about ch 5 that it's special. I was mesmerized by it. The Bolero scene in ch 7 made me feel the same way. I don't know how I'll get through the hiatus LOL

reply

Oh, I liked the finale too, just fine. It seems the consensus is that is was a good finale, but not up to the caliber of all the other episodes. That's basically how I feel.

I think the Bolero scene will go down as one of the best tv sequences of the year and Ch. 5 from top to bottom was one hell of an experience. Even that 30 second Rainbow Connection scene still kills me. All the applause for these folks...I agree, the hiatus will be tough. But, hey, the time can allow us to become experts on season 1....or ya know, have a life if that's something people do 😜

reply

The Rainbow Connection scene was so chiiling. I'll never hear that song or look at Kermit without thinking of Dan Stevens lol I hope this show wins many awards in the future.

reply

I won't be able to disassociate it either, haha....it always puts me right on the verge of tears, that scene! I never knew The Muppets could affect me so deeply, but I guess context is everything!

I don't care much about awards, but it's always nice to see deserving folks get it when they can. I'll certainly be cheering for the Legion team when that time comes.

reply

Right now I'm singing to myself "If I ruled the world" 🎡 , the song Oliver was singing when he was walking to his car in the last episode. I haven't heard that song for years.

reply

Great, now I'm singing it too lol

reply

Lol those songs from Legion are contagious.

reply

And don't even get me started on Bolero LOL I couldn't get that music out of my head for days.

reply

[deleted]

Those damn Muppets haha. I still hope Aubrey and Dan win many awards( and special effects ad makeup as well.)

reply

Yes, Dan, Aubrey, and Hawley all deserve some damn recognition....at least to start! haha, if they want to just give the show everything else while they're at it they're welcome to πŸ˜‰

I couldn't get Rainbow Connection out of my head for a week, and it sucked not only as an ear worm, because it just made me sad all over again! lol

reply

ALL the awards to everybody lol
Dan did such a good job with Rainbow connection.

reply

Oh my god, I wanted to slap him for making me so emotional, lol! His expressions are fantastic, but I'm a bit (okay a lot) of an acting dork so that's the stuff I tend to zero on in the most.

During that Ch. 5 rewatch I did the other day I just realized in that moment where Amy confesses he was adopted to him he goes through like 4 different states in the span of about 30 seconds. It's amazing and made me appreciate what he was bringing to the character all that much more.

After seeing The Guest and now this, I'm definitely a fan! You go Mr. Stevens!

reply

Haha you can slap him for me too. His acting is so amazing. I haven't watched him in anything since Downton Abbey and had no idea of his acting range.

I heard he was really good in The Guest. I'll have to watch it asap!

reply

I never got into Downton so I didn't even realize that's who it was when I saw The Guest...to be honest I never thought much or paid attention to the people in Downton unless they were already established actors like Maggie Smith or Hugh Bonneville....so barely even registered Stevens there (even though I knew he was popular on it).

I never would've thought I'd be here gushing about his amazing acting chops on this weird ass how, lol, but such is life! And I'm glad I am! And yes, do see The Guest...it's a crazy, little film and Stevens is intensely great in it, though it's a film people either seem to love or hate.

reply

I cried for days after he left Downton and then I was mad and didn't want to watch him in anything anymore. So mature right? LOL I started watching Legion only because of him and had no clue about the comic book at all. His acting wasn't anything marvelous on Downton so I was super impressed with Legion and I fell in love with him all over again hahaha

reply

Haha seems like the world had an immature moment there with that and were upset with him. Weird how sometimes we mangle character with performer, right?

Seems like it'll be something that will always plague his career, haha, but there are worse problems to have πŸ˜‹. I didn't know about any of the comics either, I just got into the show through the previews and it looking like something potentially unconventional and cerebral and that's my wheelhouse! So glad it turned out to be just that pretty much!

reply

I think he said he still apologizes for Downton lol Yeah it's weird to separate the actor from the tv character sometimes.

Oh good I thought I was the only one that didn't know the history of Legion and the Shadow King. I did a lot of research so I feel like I know the story better now. I'm not an expert on The X-men either but I'm watching those movies from the beginning.

reply

I think many people went into this show as non-comic fans or experts or even all that into the Marvel universe...of which I don't subscribe to much either.

I think there was an understanding that this show was still going to be separate enough and do its own thing as to not be tied down by all that stuff. Its difference is the allure for many, actually, including myself! I didn't do much research, just stuff I've picked up from discussions, interviews, etc....but I don't think one needs to be a master on all that to enjoy what Legion is giving!

reply

I swear every time I read a comment about Legion it was from people that knew the history of it and I was like wait I'm clueless, what's a shadow king? haha. Hawley did a good job making the show appealing to non comic book people.

reply

You're not alone. I was also clueless, but the series is explaining everything nicely even for us who had no idea what was it all about.

reply

I never thought I would be interested in comic book stuff. I feel like such a nerd lol

reply

Me too. :)

reply

πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ»

reply

Being a nerd is a good thing....just means you're passionate and into something, these days πŸ˜‰

reply

Then I will embrace my nerdiness lol

reply

*chants* One of us, one of us...haha kidding, but it's good to have interests that, you know, you're actually interested in!

reply

Ahahahahah I literally LOL'd at that.

reply

Hah! Glad to provide a bonafide LOL πŸ˜‰

Man, no need to apologize! Seriously. You're always welcome here.

About Syd... Yeah, we're on the same page about her, I'm still wondering what's between her and David as they have some pretty strange relationship right there. And the fact that she isn't real has been buzzing in my mind a lot as well. Paranoia or intuition? lol.

I mean, how did they get connected in the first place?

reply

Thanks!

I still worry she could be imagined in some way. Maybe we'll find out she died during the Clockworks incident too and she was an absorbed personality this whole time. We've seen DYE cover over memories before, obviously, and used Lenny after she died, but what if (since Syds' mind was actually David's in that instance) DYE made him think he was seeing Lenny to justify her showing up as apparition later, but really it was Syd in the wall?! And it's just a total repression/DYE manipulation thing? No, that's probably super dumb and way off.

Oh god, I just talked myself into a theory hole, haha! Oops, I'm stopping because this show strings me out 😜 But, yes, I agree that I think we should keep an eye on her for whatever it turns out to me...because I think it will be something.

reply

The Lenny in the wall thing still needs to be solved, IMO. That's not entirely clear yet.

reply

I mean, as I understand it, she was real while in Clockworks. Syd, as David, accidentally killed her...and then DYE assumed her to be able to better manipulate David. I don't know if it's anything more than that, but I'm kinda liking the theory I purposed above....because it's just insane enough to be something they'd do! Lol! I don't think it'll actually be that, but that's the sort of way I keep viewing Syd, in a sense.

She's on a short leash with me!

reply

But why? How? Why would she do that? That's what I don't understand.

Like... she was scared and she just killed her bf's BF. (sorry, couldn't resist)

reply

I think she killed Lenny because she was scared, nervous, and not so in control of insane powers she didn't understand or realize she had.

Like "Lenny," said...you can't give a newbie a bazooka and not expect them to blow shit up. That bazooka was his powers...I mean, I know I wouldn't handle that very well if suddenly all those abilities were thrown onto me in an already intense situation, haha

reply

Makes sense to me.

Although, she precisely killed her boyfriend's best friend, so maybe she was a little jealous subconsciously? :P

reply

We definitely need Syd's backstory.

reply

Exactly! Humanize her, for heaven's sake!

reply

Yep!
