Is this set in the 70s?
What's with the hair and the outfits?
shareI wondered that too. They seem to have modern technology, they have MRI machines, but David's girlfriend in the flashbacks is dressed like mid to late 60's then Oliver Bird looks very 70's, and he asked if girls still go braless and are into "free love". David said, no, Bras are back now.
The cars aren't vintage, that I have noticed. The way they were "vaping" drugs looked modern. I want someone to sell those frog vaporizers. LOL
It seems to be a mish mash of time periods.
They do sell frog humidifiers, as well as other animals: https://www.amazon.com/Crane-Adorable-Ultrasonic-Cool-Humidifier/dp/B000GWE2U6/
shareIt's intentionally vague and ambiguous so as to give the viewer a more off-kilter look at the world, perhaps in the way David would see it. I believe Hawley said they don't want to have to be tied down to a specific time or era and it certainly does seem to be an effective way to throw the audience off balance a bit!

I think that is an excellent analysis.
Well, everything seems outdated for today's standards, so my answer's going to be... no. (it's a trap)
shareOn the other hand, I don't remember seeing a single phone so far, do you?
No cars, for the most part either because that's something else Hawley wanted to avoid so they have less a chance of grounding it in some time or reality we'd for sure recognize.
The interrogator and all of Division 3 seem to have pretty up to date or futuristic equipment and tech though so that's where some of the ambiguity comes into play. Also, some of that can be found in the architectural designs too. A lot of it has this sort of wonky, timeless feel to it where it may fit in the past, but wouldn't quite seem out of style today either. I like when shows do this, it's really quite brilliant.
It's weird. Definitely some splicing of time periods. You've got modern stuff like tablets and as mentioned, division 3 are pretty well tooled up with HK G36s which are late 90s.
shareThe vague time is everywhere in this show, not even just in its gadgets or lack thereof, it's crazy! Here's a really cool article with the costume designer and how they approached and achieved some of the looks on the show to keep in line with the ambiguity of time: Costume Article
Very beautiful chromatism indeed, the Mary Quant brushstrokes were a nice touch. The sister looked lovely.
shareI'm in love with all of these touches...from the clothes to the architecture to the use of color. It's all so thoughtful and well done and is the sort of thing that separates good shows from great ones.
shareMelanie's husband who's been absent for 20 years looks like he's stuck in the 70', and that could be some kind of a reference point.
shareyeah i was wording about Melanie's husband, he seems very 70's and so does the rest of the show so i wonder who he has been there 20 years with nothing changing in the real world.
