Real shame marvel screwed edgar wright

In 2006, edgar wright was interested in adapting antman and avi arad (not sure why Avi gets hate these days) put it into preproduction. However, when kevin feige replaced avi, he was hesitant to make the film despite it being greenlit in all but name only. Edgar took advantage of the free time he had to make 3 classic films including Scott pilgrim.

When marvel finally decided to make antman, they wanted to do their own version with edgar basically being a puppet director. When marvel breached their deal to have other writers take over, edgar decided he was finally tired of being screwed around by kevin and left to go make baby driver.

The worst part is that antman used the template of Edgar's vision but replaced much of the content with dumber jokes and marvel cliches.

Marvel didn't even credit edgar wright in antman 2 despite the characters being based off his version (I know antman was created well before edgar wright but with edgar basically reinventing the characters, he was entitled to at least an executive producer credit).

I really hope he does a spiderman related film at sony since Avi arad was the only person at marvel who shared his enthuasium (and may have convinced sony to take on baby driver)

Nah, let him stick to original comedy.

Marvel didn't screw Edgar Wright, he couldn't get a script together and Marvel finally had to explore other options. The first Ant-man movie should have been MCU Phase 1, and Ant-man and the Wasp should have been founding members of the cinematic Avengers team.

reply

His script was ready for nearly a decade. Marvel choose to screw him around and edgar didnt feel it was worth sticking around anymore.

The first Ant-Man is a great film, and much funnier than anything Wright's ever done. I like Wright's films, don't get me wrong, they just aren't as witty or as sophisticated with their humor as was the original Ant-Man film. Personally, I"m glad Marvel went the direction they did, as I don't think an "Edgar Wright Film" is a good fit for the MCU's tone.

YIKES. I don't blame 20fork for not replying. Funnier than anything Wright's done, good lord. I need a drink.

If you don't think so, so be it. I find Wright's brand of humor to be a bit too telegraphed and obvious, with something a bit forced and stilted about it. I still enjoy his films, but am always left feeling he's trying very hard to be more intelligent and clever than he is. He's never, in my estimation, been able to achieve the free-flowing and unpredictable style of wit that Ant-Man offered.

Again, if you're a fan of him, and his brand of humor, what I'm saying won't ring true at all, but that's the nature of comedy, and the reason it comes in so many forms. I consider Preston Sturges and Monty Python to be side-splitting, others can watch those stone-faced, then laugh at a Judd Apatow film. Enjoy your drink.

FilmBuff....the first film is great cause Edgar Wright still wrote the movie, he just left as director, this second travesty of a sequel had 6 worthless writers, including lame Paul Rudd who wrote all the cheesy lame 6 year old jokes for this movie, that is the first Ant man was actually watchable, thanks to Wright.

reply

Blatantly untrue. Wright kept waffling and dragging things out.

This guy likes to make shit up. In another thread he tried to pretend Ant-Man was one of Marvel's more popular heroes (certainly more popular than that Captain America fella), that Marvel TV is not owned by Disney, that the budget for MCU movies is larger than we know because they "hide" part of the budgets, and that Disney is leading a vast criminal conspiracy.

reply

That's a whole lot of making things up he's got going for him.

reply

He disappeared quickly so who knows how serious he was.

I'm kind of glad. Even though Peyton Reed is sort of a journeyman director, the MCU tends to better with these kinds of guys. Scott Derrickson and James Gunn were the same; thoroughly mediocre directors before Marvel came along and gave them a shot.

Edgar Wright is the kind of guy who probably fancies himself an auteur. He wants every one of his movies to have a unique stamp on it. And his movies are somewhat hit or miss. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were great, but The World's End was just ok and I thought Baby Driver was a complete mess. A lot of the time directors like Wright just overload their movies with stylistic flourishes for the sake of showing off. Edgar Wright is one such director who indulges in this frequently
