There's no commercial reason to remake it! It's not like this has blockbuster written over it.
The 1973 version is one of the best-made films with Steve McQueen & Dustin Hoffman. Both in their PRIME. Who could they possibly get to live up to those two on screen?
I always liked Steve McQueen. He was a good (but not great) actor.....more a movie star than anything else (which has it's own appeal, as well.) That said, I think that Papillon was that special moment when he touched greatness, and gave a performance well worthy of an Academy Award.
The idea of remaking this film that was perfectly done the first time around just makes no sense at all.
