The idiot who dreamt this load of bull up

Put him on Devils Island without food or water and with hard labour.

Hollywood, try to invest in NEW stories, and try not to make lame excuses for remakes.

Idiots.

Movies are never made because they need to be made. They are made because they make money and because someone has an idea for a unique take on it. It's why Shakespeare keeps being redone and will always be redone in different ways. It's why there will always be romance stories, and slasher films that are vaguely similar to most other romance stories and slasher films. But each of them have the signature of the new crews and writers that are showing their personal take on those kinds of stories.

People use the term remake as if it's derogatory. It isn't. People don't sneer every time a new version of Macbeth or Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet comes out. And those are often WORD FOR WORD almost identical. It's because, by their nature, they are all different, with different tones, sometimes even different settings. The characters are often a bit different also. But they keep getting made because they are great stories, and can be looked at and shown from all different perspectives. The best stories will ALWAYS keep being remade because that's what many people really want to see. IT's because of their universal appeal.

And besides, if this is a terrible film, it will have absolutely no effect on the original. It will still exist, and still be considered a classic. It still has great performances by Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen. People who remember it will still watch it. People who've never seen it will still be able to discover it. At worst, people will come to the original, having heard of the remake, and that's always a good thing. No, what you really have to worry about is if this film is decent. Because then, people might ignore the original. Certainly, some may still go out of their way to see it. But in some people's minds, if this is a good film, the original may not exist.f But you should never worry about stupid people, or make decisions based on their opinions, or let them affect your opinion.

So let them make a remake. Maybe it will be terrible. Maybe it will be decent. I suspect that it will not be great, because I haven't been at all impressed with Charlie Hunnam, and I can't visualize him as the title character. But I do want to see Rami Malek doing something else. So I may see the film when it comes out. Maybe.

Well said, I applaud you sir. I made a post a few days ago trying to say pretty much the same thing, but you said it (or wrote it) so much better. I completely agree with you.

Dorothy Mantooth is a saint!

I agree completely. well-said.

Great post, also never understood why people complain about remakes or think some films never should be allowed to be remade. Not to mention that many current movies considered as classics actually are remakes of even older movies (Ben-Hur, Malthese Falcon, Wizard of Oz, etc)

reply

yes but apparently the new Ben Hur is terrible - so was the remake of Wizard of Oz. Steve Mcqueen is a legend and i cannot imagine how any of the modern metro sexual nanny boys could ever fill his shoes. Nor Charles Bronson's for that matter!
oh, but yes, they have tried with teh remake of another classic,The magnificent Seven. oh give me strength!

reply

Sure, they are both terrible. But the now considered classics, Wizard of Oz from 1939 and Ben-Hur from 1959 can be considered remakes of Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925) and The Wizard of Oz (1925). So you never know when a remake is going to improve from the original. Even the original The magnificent Seven, is of course considered a remake of Seven Samurai from 1954., both great movies!

(Haldurgz)written like a hollywood writer without a original idea or thought of his own

A remake is only bad when it steals from the budget of another script/project that is original and where the end product is great. Thinking about the lack of ideas in Hollywood at this time (just look at the sheer load of crappy superhero movies) I believe it this movie merits a remake.

reply

the movie is a classic and the great actors gave their very best it should be required viewing in acting schools why these morons think it needs to be remade boggles the mind anyone who hasn't seen the movie who has a brain give it a watch its really worth it.

I like Charlie Hunnam. I think he can do a good job. Better wear a flack jacket though. Playing King Arthur is a safer bet anyday.
