Not that great, or even good really.
Unbelievably overrated. I'm guessing that most people are so focused on the controversial (albeit unoriginal) premise, that they're failing to see all the major faults this film has.
!!!SPOILERS!!!
For instance, how in the fuck has this family never been caught, or at the very least investigated? They're unabashedly using their real names, and have been doing this to dozens of victims, so how has no suspicion ever been raised when all of these people initially disappeared? Prior to what we see, no one has ever searched for their friends/loved ones before the TSA agent?
The mystery behind the plot is so paper thin, my lady friend and I knew exactly what was going to happen within 5-10 minutes, and none of our expectations were ever subverted all the way until the end credits began to roll, including the fact the daughter was in on it the entire time. Pretty convenient how those pictures of her with former lovers were just suddenly out in the open for the protagonist to find. Laziest way possible to introduce her deception. Seriously.
Hypnosis is about the dumbest means imaginable when it comes to initially controlling the host bodies. What if someone doesn't smoke or is incapable of thought persuasion?
Why would anyone want to transfer their mind into another body, just so they could live as a maid or lawn care/maintenance person to their own offspring? That prospect sounds pretty awful, and if it was supposed to be ironic, it wasn't.
This is not a horror flick. I have no idea why it was marketed as one. It's a thriller void of any true tension. I wasn't bored, but I was never entertained.
The best part of the entire experience was Daniel Kaluuya. He was great in "Black Mirror" and he is great here too. The parents were a waste of decent casting though. They could have been anybody and it wouldn't have impacted a thing.
Overall it's a completely disposable movie that has swept people over with race baiting.
