I'd argue that the first of the current Godzilla series took more of a sci-fi based approach, with almost an arthouse sensibility at times, but beyond that, they're all campy fun. A hollow earth makes as much sense as a giant lizard who not only survives having an atomic bomb detonated in its face, but grows stronger from it, which is right in line with Godzilla tucking his tail between his legs and using his breath to fly, or Rodan disintegrating into pixie dust to resurrect Godzilla after Mechagodzilla had chopped his brain into little pieces. The more ridiculous the better, as long as we get to see giant monsters pummel one another, and even better when it's amazing CGI and not a guy in rubber suit.
