Fictional story in a fictional city, so obviously not filmed in MO..opening scenes gave that away with the mountains. Filmed in NC (pretty scenery). Why not just make fictional city in NC? Then again, so much of this movie was not seated in reality, maybe it was intentional.

I had to look it up after seeing the pretty lake and mountains and finding it hard to believe that terrain existed in MO and then realized Ebbing doesn't even exist. Strange choice anyway.

Supposedly it is inspired by a real life story that happened some years ago in Vidor, Texas. Her name was Kathy Page and it was believed her ex-husband murdered her. For years when you would drive down that stretch of Interstate-10 you would see the billboards and signs.
