great show!

I can't figure out how to add a user review, but I wanted to say I loved the first episode of this show! I can't believe the crappy rating some user gave it after watching only a trailer.

reply

well, a lot of people are fond of the original books, and this programme has altered the story quite a bit. However, I shall give it a couole more episodes before rating it.

reply

I enjoyed the first episode too, although I'd never heard of the books. I generally prefer not having anything to compare a TV show or movie with, and just judge it on its own merits.

reply

I haven't read the books so I have nothing to compare it to. I am looking forward the the next episode.

reply

I thought the first episode was entertaining. It has some good real life characters. Gerry is my favourite of them so far. I recognised him as the boy from 'Mr Holmes.' Also I chuckled at the cigarette-addicted monk.

I loved it too, have not read the book but did watch "my family and other animals" back in 2005

reply

I concur, I loved it too. Wish I had the courage to up sticks and find a new life too!

reply

I really liked it too :) and Gerry seems a lovely character, with all his animals! That old drunk guy though, didn't like him so much! When the children first introduced him, I was like "wow, he's nowhere near the same age as their mother!" and was just waiting for her to comment on that haha.

reply

Not read the book but loved watching the first episode. Very brave to up sticks and start a new life in a foreign country, especially being a woman in those days?

In real life it was the oldest son, Larry, who persuaded Mother to move to Greece. However, she had lived for most of her life in India before her husband died, so she was no stranger to foreign travel.

reply

I don't think that Captain Creech will be appearing in the other episodes. He was far too old and drunken for Louisa. I wonder if the name of the character in Durrell's book led to the word 'creech' being used as a term for a gate-crasher or unwanted guest.

reply

just watching episode 2 now. It is unbelievably bad. gritting my teeth and forcing myself to watch to the end, just in case something happens that is like the book, but I don't suppose it will. How can they have managed to make it so awful? the ridiculous anachranistic language is very irritating - it is full if expresssions that nobody ever useed in the 1930s. And how boring they have made all the family! Especially Mother, who in the books is such a delightful character. This really is awful. and they're even making out that theo wasn't a doctor! quite outrageous.

reply

I couldn't imagine someone saying "He's out of your league" in the 1930s. I thought it was a bit strange that Larry had money to get himself and his friends drunk, while Louisa was scraping round for enough food at the table. Episode 2 was a disappointment.

I might be wrong, but maybe his friends had money? (assuming the yacht at the end was theirs?)
But yes comapred to the first ep it was disappointment

reply

You could be right in suggesting that Larry sponged off his mates. Possibly on the strength that he would be able to repay their favour soon. He seemed to be pretty sure that he would be receiving an advance on the sale of his short story.

reply

Larry was alreday having some success as a writer at the time they moved to Greece. and Mother certainly was not as hard up as she isortrayed as being in this series - they could afford to employ a Maid for instance.

reply

really have to agree with all of this. this is terrible

reply

can't stop watching it even though it's descended into the pits of wtf? so many things wrong with it

Agree, my head really popped up when they used the word, "bikini." For Heaven's sake, the name came from WWII & the Bikini Atoll! And I'd read about how the mother was supposed to be delightful, when all I want to do is yell at her for being such a wimp, letting the children walk all over her and never making them do the very simple, easy things she tells them to do!

reply

I thought that the third episode was an improvement on the disappointing Episode 2. I am warming to Lugaretzia as a character. She is funny. Also I liked Margo in this episode. Especially her own filing system and her pretensions to being a Greek Agatha Christie.

However Louisa is not always finding favour with me. I didn't like the way that she intruded on the Greek convict at his wife's grave. I wouldn't go stalking up to somebody while they were quietly reflecting at a loved one's resting place. That's private space. On a positive note, the scenery and the animals are continuing to enchant.

reply

I am concerned that Roger is not getting enough nourishment! His resigned expressions make me laugh though.

It's been commissioned for 2nd series YAY! Found in on itv demand watched it and really enjoyed. Finally something decent on a Sunday night. Thanks ITV

reply

Yes, you are correct Millymoo about a second series. This was also confirmed by Keeley Hawes when she appeared on Graham Norton show on Friday 15th April.

Margo with her filing system was hilarious and she thought she’d done something really amazing.
