Would you have volunteered to be out in the open, even armed, as a lookout when you don't know if a battalion could be coming over the nearest hill? You would be a sitting duck. Even without a lookout, the Germans eventually did start firing on the boat for target practice, so they were somewhere nearby.
Even in the unlikely instance where you could see someone coming from far off and give a warning, how difficult would it be to get everyone out with the tide rising? And where would they go?
Not even close to what I suggested. The lookout very easily could have hidden and taken cover. Anything was better than just sitting down below waiting for the tide to come in Nice strawman.
