It's actually just fine.

It's not going to be a tough competitor in the Peak Television landscape because there's a lot of excruciatingly well-written stuff out there, but I like all the actors and it's got a kind of low-key charm that grows on you. Not sure who this is aimed at, but it does a good job of avoiding heavy stereotypes about 'country people'. The setting is kind of incidental and mostly gives Sam Elliott a habitat in which to do his thing. I gave this a try because I hadn't seen Debra Winger in anything recently, and used to really enjoy That 70s show. Danny Masterson and Ashton Kutcher still have that chemistry, so even though this isn't the same show I wasn't disappointed in that reunion.

Is it great? No. But I like it. The writing is good. The players are good. The humor is light, naughty but not too crude. The drama is light, touching on real-life problems without getting too gritty. The parents aren't treated like geezers. All the characters are treated with a basic respect. It's not groundbreaking but there really isn't a whole lot out there right now that's this easy on the nerves but still entertaining. I'll keep watching. Nice foil for the heavy hitters in my rotation when I've had a rough week.
