**Spoiler** - Why no scene of Juan's death?

I can understand the decision to omit it and make it restrained, not opportunistic on emotion, but that would arguably have been one of the most critical points in Little/Chiron/Black's life for viewers to see.

It isn't necessary. It would sort of detract from the film if the filmmakers spent time focusing on the death of a minor character. The audience is supposed to pick up on what's happened between these time periods in the film.

reply

Minor Character is right. Most undeserving Oscar Nomination of all time. Thanks to all the folks who fabricated the white Oscars controversy last year.

reply

Ummmm Judi Dench won an Oscar for 7 minutes of screen time... Anthony Hopkins for 14 minutes... lets please stop with the bull. He is amazing.

Black became the complete living embodiment of Juan...from the car, to the gold teeth fronts, to the career. Ali's acting may have been minor, but the character was a huge part of the film which ultimately shaped the protagonists life.

The end of the second act is where the film started dragging, and where I would've made cuts if time truly was of concern.

You answered your own question. Black's outwardly appearance is obviously influenced by Juan. Like a boy who looks up to their father, Chiron followed in the foot-steps of Juan. It is completely unnecessary to include Juan's death. The film provides context clues. We don't need to be spook fed; we understand that Juan has passed, and if obviously impacted Black's life.

It would be redundant and thematically out of place with the rest of the film.

I think Mahershala Ali did a great job. Totally deserved nomination. An actor does not need to be explosive to show his skills. He did a subtle significant performance. I'd vote him.

reply

I likely would have cried at that scene.

Wait, who even said Juan died? Where did I miss that?

I remember this being mentioned at least twice during the middle section: Chiron's mother says that she hasn't seen Teresa since Juan's funeral, and the bully at school also mentions that Juan has been dead for a while. Teresa may have mentioned it also, when Chiron goes over to sleep at her house.
