Straight blk male friends won't see it because they think its a gay film

Several of my straight black male friends have told me they're not interested in seeing this because its "a gay film". I tell them "MOONLIGHT is much more than that. It has one, count em' ONE little kiss in the middle of the film between two teenagers. THAT'S IT, just 1 and it's labeled "a gay film". MOONLIGHT is about feelings that are universal.

Is the OP really surprised? A lot of straight black people especially black heterosexual males are homophobes.

I convinced my brother (who is white but really influenced by hip hop culture) to see it, but left out the plotline about Chiron and Kevin when I described it to him. Afterward, he just told me "It sucked. I'm not comfortable watching that sorta thing."His friend (who is black and also from Miami) said that the portrayal of "fags" was inaccurate because everybody knows who they are in Miami and there'd be no secrets. He was really hateful in his comments. I don't understand this mindset; I see so many great comments and reviews of the film where plenty of heterosexual people appreciate it as a beautiful film and story about a lonely man who may finally find happiness. It makes me really sad and so frustrated that there are people who still feel this way and are close minded :(

I know I am generalizing but women seem more mature when it comes to topics like sexuality. Yes some women are homophobic too but I do think women seem to be more open minded about these issues. I think for some straight men male homosexuality challenges their ideas about masculinity. I could be wrong but for some straight men seeing two men kiss or be gay freaks them out. It strikes a fear in them.

You love to feel that it "freaks them out" or scares them, but no, the vast majority of straight men don't want to watch two guys getting it on is because it is revolting to them, plain and simple. I couldn't care less if you are homosexual, I just don't want to know, just as I don't go around trumpeting my sexuality. Now, two women.....different story. And I know plenty of women who are turned off and on by the same things: no to dudes, yes to chicks.

reply

LOL! You think you speak for "the vast majority of straight men"? Please. You're just a run-of-the-mill ignoramus.

Why is it revolting to them? What's the big distinction between it being "revolting" and it "freaking them out"? Those two reactions don't seem too far from each other to me, so it almost seems like you're quibbling over language.

This movie hardly has "two guys getting it on", like let's not pretend this is some hardcore gay porno. The movie barely shows anything, the adult versions of the characters don't even touch each other FFS. It's got ONE kiss, and brief allusions to a male homosexual attraction. I'm straight and I didn't find it revolting or freaky. It was really tender and universal. I found a couple moments kind of awkward and funny, though I suspect that has more to do with American prudishness than anything else.

It's insecurity which in and of itself makes them less manly and more like junior high school boys. I can tell you women look down at that shallow insensitive *beep* like you're just a kid who never grew up.

And maybe they should say they are disgusted by seeing two women kiss or get physical sexually, and that anyone who likes that is sick too. Only fair, right?

I'm going to respectfully disagree with this. I don't think it's that black and white.

Are they more mature or is it that they find the homoerotic titillating?

You can be mature and still not want to see a movie about gay men. Some people might not want to see a movie about old people. So what?

reply

I don't think it strikes a fear. They just are not interested in seeing it.

reply

I think that women are sexually wired differently than men. So many times, I have seen women go back and forth between being lesbian, and then straight, and then lesbian.

Men are usually either gay or straight.

I think that is why women are more tolerant of this.

They've not homophobes, they just don't like homosexuality. Do you know what -phobe means? You would like for that to be true, as it empowers you and diminishes them. Just ain't so, McGee.

reply

That's exactly what a homophobe is. Don't get caught up in etymological fallacies. Homophobia is an irrational aversion to homosexuality or homosexuals.

reply

This makes you seem like you are are being willfully disingenuous about the definition of homophobia just to exempt yourself from being defined as a homophobe.

The word "homophobia" is a combination of two different words that come from the Greek--the vast majority of English words are derived from other languages' words--but like most words that have come into our language from others', the meaning of "homophobia" has evolved past literal Greek translation to its actual English meaning.

It sounds like you are trying to find a loophole by which a person is not a homophobe if he or she only hates homosexuality and is not afraid of them. But (as the previous poster pointed out) both the literal dictionary definition and the widely understood cultural meaning of the word "homophobia" show that your narrow and probably deliberate misunderstanding of the word is obviously not its whole meaning.

Merriam-Webster:
homophobia
noun ho·mo·pho·bia \ˌhō-mə-ˈfō-bē-ə\

Definition of homophobia

: irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals

homophobic \ˌhō-mə-ˈfō-bik\ adjective

Just because a straight black man does not want to see this movie does not mean that he is a homophobe. I don't like going to see scary movies. Does that mean I'm a scaryphobe? If a movie does not peak a person's interest, it's not bigotry.

reply

It's not homophobic if a straight person is not interested. Some women are not interested in horror films or action films. Does that make them horrorphobic? Stop trying to make people like what you like.

reply

Just because straight men do not want to see them film does not make them "homophobes." Straight men might not want to see a film about children either. Does that make them childrenphobes?

I'm trying to review films and I actually got called out because I didn't call out the gay aspect of the film more. But honestly I felt I called it as I see it. There is a homosexual aspect to the movie but there is also so much more to it that I wish people would think about and appreciate. It really is one of the best films about young black males growing up in these types of neighborhoods since Boyz N the Hood.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

The reason I haven't seen it yet is because of the gay aspect. My friend explained to me that that is only a small part of the movie, so I will see it over the weekend. I felt the same way about Brokeback Mountain. It caught my interest while channel surfing, and when I checked the guide, I saw it was BM. It was excellent and is now one of my favorite movies.

Heard about the Oscar buzz so I unknowingly watched online. I didn't read much about it beforehand other than the main characters being nominated. I have to admit, had I known it was about black inner-city males struggling with their sexuallity I would have passed on it in a heartbeat. Not to bash the film b/c it was beautifully shot and told but just not my genre.

a kiss doesn't make it a gay film, but a gay character even without kissing anyone, does.
so i appreciate the story but that isn't for me. i wanted to watch this movie tomorrow but thanks to you i found out about the gay theme and i don't feel an urge to watch it. it is as simple as that. i like superheroes movies, animation, drama about growing up, ..., but i don't enjoy comedies, horrors, dramas about gay discovering his love interest and so... i will skip this one and wait for The Great wall next week

Sucks to be you, since this movie IS mostly a drama about growing up.

It's not about being gay, it's about being your true self.

" Now, two women.....different story. And I know plenty of women who are turned off and on by the same things: no to dudes, yes to chicks"

Nu-uh. I think you'll find, much like boys and their 'girl-on-girl action', a lot of het and queer women find two guys getting it on pretty hot. The SECOND most popular cateogory on Pornhub for female visitors to the site is 'gay male'. M/M porn troupes like The Cocky Boys have huge female fan bases. You might also want to check out the whole slash fiction thing. It's big.

So... as well as being generally narrow minded you're also just...wrong.

reply

He's not "generally narrow minded" just because he is not interested in a movie about homosexuality.

reply

It's a bit faggety. Doesn't mean it's not a beautiful film. There's plenty of macho films for the people who are too prude.
