Things I Liked and Disliked

Liked:

- It has Will Arnett in it.
- The setting and the way it was shot
- The "lifestyle selling" aspect of it. I always think shows like this should have an aspirational vibe, and this one made it seem like it was a cool place to live where everyone knew each other and rent was so cheap no one had to work.
- Downbeat ending

Disliked

- One dimensional characters / caricatures. Each character felt really unoriginal and under developed. In the first episode Chip was just a series of irritating quips, like he was a placeholder than never got rewritten.
- A character has the name "London" and people just accept it like it's normal
- Early 20s tech billionaire trope/cliche
- I'm not sure whereabouts this is set - perhaps they should have mentioned it in passing in one episode
- Can there be a show like this that isn't set in LA or New York? Masters of None, Love, every other thing ever...
- Completely unresolved ending where no character has anything resembling an arc

Overall: Liked.

Liked the obvious Big Lebowski comparisons of character, dialogue and theme.
Disliked .... nothing.

One dimensional characters / caricatures.

It's a sit-com, no?

A character has the name "London" and people just accept it like it's normal

I hate bad character names in movies also.

Early 20s tech billionaire trope/cliche

They are in the Silicon Beach area, after all.

I'm not sure whereabouts this is set - perhaps they should have mentioned it in passing in one episode

I thought they did, but then I'm very familiar with Venice so maybe I never noticed. Does it matter?

Can there be a show like this that isn't set in LA or New York?

Would cost considerably more to produce if set elsewhere.

Completely unresolved ending where no character has anything resembling an arc

Agree. And I didn't even know that was the whole season (8 episodes.) I expected more. A lot happened but the lead is pretty much the same guy at the end.

I think he was kidding about them never mentioning where they were

I've only watched the first 3 episodes and there have been plenty of times they've said they're in Venice. It's brought up in the first minute of the first episode.

Several more eps in... yeah, it kind of blows. Didn't really progress enough for me. Characters, blah. Maybe pick it up again in the future to see how it turns out.

reply

They addressed most of your dislikes within the show. If you aren't going to bother paying attention, your *beep* opinion doesn't matter.

reply

Wah.

If you are going to critique a show without paying to the details, then your opinion is wrong and doesn't matter. Simple. Now who are you and what is your contribution to society? Besides saying stupid sh*t?

reply

I disagree with your thoughts on the ending. I abslutely loved it. Without spoiling anything, I felt the unresolved nature of the plot development was very REAL. It felt *bangs on table* real! (Topher reference). Not all of us are actually able to change and be the person society needs us to be. Characters in this show are no different. I felt very disappointed in a certain character (again, no spoilers), but that felt very real. I was happy I felt disappointed. As much as I wanted him/her to come clean, I'm glad it didn't happened. The character stayed true.

I thought Flaked was overall a very powerful series. It's so much more than just a sit-com. It had its funny moments. Insanely well acted. And as the story progressed, the stakes got higher and higher, and you became more and more pulled into Chip's life. And of course, in doing so, you realized how flawed he was as a person.

I really hope this gets a second season, but after seeing a lot of the negative critiques, I'd be surprised if it did. Too bad. That being said, those 8 episodes are golden. Definitely will have to watch again.

reply

I feel like they said Venice every 5 minutes. Not sure how you missed that?

reply

Right? Op obviously wasn't paying attention

reply

I'm not sure, but I took it as Sarcasm, that they mentioned it too often, maybe not though.

reply

Yep, was being sarcastic. They say it loads.
