Weird tone and the leads were miscast

What were they trying to do here? It’s serious one moment, funny (attempting) the next? Yeah after our main characters slaughter a bunch of people I want some comedy mixed in. Wait no I don’t. I wasn’t buying it at all that these two main dudes are brothers. They look nothing alike and John C Reily is just to goofy looking to take seriously.

I enjoyed the performances from all four leads. Reilly and Phoenix not really looking similar didn’t bother me - I know plenty of siblings who look little like one another. Their chemistry kept things moving nicely and I had no problem with the shifts in tone. Solid enough film.

Riz Ahmed was also miscast. There were no Gold Rush prospecters of Pakistani descent, and likely no Pakistanis at all in the United States in 1851.

"The first wave of immigrants from present-day Pakistan migrated to the United States between 1893 and 1917 and settled in California as contract laborers." ( https://www.americanpakistan.org/pakistani-americans )

Sorry, but I can't find any way to move it here: https://moviechat.org/user/5d721cabe0a65e1baad408c6

Maybe we can ask the mods?

I also enjoyed the performances of all leads.

I didn't even think that Reily and Phoenix didn't look alike until reading this post.
I think they cared for each other enough that I just believed they are blood brothers.

Also if you watch enough current westerns, Little House, Love Comes Softly, Damnation, etc, siblings just call each other that.
They don't get into the semantics of this is my brother by my mother but not my father.

No doubt about it, this is a VERY unique western.

I really liked it for the most part. But I have to agree with a previous poster, Riz Ahmed was terribly miscast in this. But it didn't ruin the film or anything. In fact, I would like to know more about their reasons for putting him in this movie.

But overall, a good film in my view, I'll give it a solid 7.3 out of 10. If you're looking for something totally different this is your film.

I thought Reilly and Phoenix were superb. Ahmed was the only one miscast. It wasn't a classic but it was enjoyable and intriguing and a different take on the usual Wild West stories.
