What a major disappointment!!
Where to start? It is actually hard to number the BIG BIG series of mistakes, drama driven stupid situations, common sense departure that these characters have had.
After the initial promotion (which was beautifully crafted) of the trailers, I was honestly expecting something much better. Specially coming from NAT-GEO.
Professional astronauts (well trained) follow procedure, obey their commander, communicate constantly with each other.
From the very first episode we start to see departures from all of the above.
A 10 minute delay in communications with Earth makes things difficult, but it´s not that long when the decision has to be made weather to leave the spacecraft and go in the rover to the base camp or not, and how many should make the trip or how many trips can be made. All these things would be worked out at both ends and the best option taken. From people simply freezing (either unable to speak, or somehow not responding to the simplest questions), to disobeying any orders given to them for safety and from common sense. In an exploring mission on Mars, the talking would be back and forth almost constantly, describing everything and making all sorts of comments. Only a suicidal or crazy astronaut would disconnect the tether from his/her suit to start walking inside an unknown dark cave (AND EVEN BACKWARDS MIND YOU).
There is NO WAY, that such a character as Richardson would be on the second manned trip to Mars and endanger the whole mission and all the people already there.
There is NO WAY there could be a door that opens simply outward to the dangerous environment without an airlock ANYWHERE in the compound.
