Pressurization plot hole

The plant psycho dude casually opens a door to the outside. There is no air lock but incredibly the door opens outward. How can this be allowed to exist? Why have a door there especially one that opens the wrong way without an air lock? Serious design fault yet no one was concerned? Even in airplane pressurized cabins, the doors can only open inward. The inside pressure is its own safety device. The door cannot be opened because of the inside pressure is keeping it closed. The way the greenhouse room was set up, the inside pressure would be constantly pushing on the door to open. And you're on Mars?? With all the intelligence and technology it would take to get to Mars, let alone live there, the Mars program overlooked this simple and obvious fact?

I totally agree. An inexcusably stupid plot device in order to artificially create drama.

They're on Mars, for crissakes. No free flowing water; 99% less atmospheric pressure; virtually no free oxygen.

And the disaster they have to create is a green house door that opens without an airlock like it goes to the backyard patio in Iowa or someplace?

And if Paul wasn't discernibly suicidal, he sure looked sickly enough that he should have been in sickbay or at least been put under observation.

You are correct, sir! Very poor writing.

AGREE!!
Probably the biggest plot hole in the series. SO OBVIOUS!!

reply

Agree completely. Manufactured drama.

reply

Yep I also agree. Its such a *beep* series but I can't stop watching it.

PS: Pressurised aircraft do have outward opening doors.

Better yet, any access to the outside would have a code to be able to open it. Otherwise ANYONE could have open this door and if opened could jeopardize the mission!. Which would mean this plant guy should not have had a high enough qualification be given the code for the door! You are right, what are the writers thinking?!

Bigger than a plot hole. It's a plot canyon.

Just watched S01E05 and this is exactly why I came to this board. There will never ever, ever, ever be a direct egress to the outside from any habitat placed on an inhospitable planet - EVER.

I dont care what artist rendering you try to show me, or a set of plans that show an exit directly from a hab into the exterior atmosphere. This will never exist in reality, not in any scenario.

Every door will be secured by an airlock, on every planet that lacks suitable conditions to support human life.
