Sure it's a scifi daydreamy thing to go to mars but despite Stephen Hawkings dire predictions I think we need to focus on earth. Clean the atmosphere. Clean the oceans. Refurbish the rock we have instead on this fantasy move to a planet with so much less water and other things we need to survive. Earth ain't dead yet, in fact, she's a helluva lot more alive than Mars. What is this desire to throw earth in the heap? The diamond has lost it's shine so toss it out and find a better one. Earth is the best chance for our survival until we can break the light speed barrier so step up and make your voice heard that Earth is still our home and she deserves some respect and maybe an enema.
Well the US has just elected Trump who will set this planet back about 60 years. Sadly breaking the light barrier is impossible - but we can approach relativistic speeds using tiny craft.
I can't disagree about Trump. But there could be an alternative to breaking the light barrier with worm holes or quantum tunneling or something out of the box of traditional physics.
Yes there could be alternatives - but if we ever learn how to harness them we're talking 100's of years into the future. I just hope I live long enough to see us land on Mars
That reminds me of this book idea I had once where a ship takes off heading for another system at relativistic speeds only to arrive and find out it's been colonized by earth from ships that had a FTL drive of some kind.
an interesting idea is all it will probably ever be. I have a ton of interesting ideas but I'm too damn lazy to really dig in to churning one out as a novel or novella

... The first generation starship story, which also included the breakthrough notion of Earth developing faster than light ships that beat the [generation ship] to its destination, appeared in the October 1940 issue of Amazing Stories. ...

I didn't vote for him (or Clinton), but the president should not prevent the private sector from accomplishing the above. I suspect based upon his business background Trump may support something like that.

Perhaps these tiny ships can be piloted by a crew with tiny minds like yours - this is, after all, a movie/TV forum. Why come here and be an imbecile, when you could just as easily go to the Huffington Post, where you'd be considered a savant instead of an idiot.
Wrong. Electing Hillary and having her import a million Muslim "refugees" would set this country back 600 years. Germany paid for it again today at their Christmas Market. 9 dead 50 injured....so far.
I found it odd that this series pretty much put all the blame on Nixon for the end of U.S. manned space exploration. All of the manned Apollo missions to the Moon happened during his two terms. If anything it was the democratically controlled Congress that didn't like the continued funding of these manned trips to the Moon. And if anybody dismantled our space program it would be 0bama. It is under his regime that the U.S.A. no longer has a manned rocket for the first time since 1961. In his second term and even before the end of his first, the only way to send an American into space orbit was hitching a ride with the Russians. An unconscionable thought from the days of the space race of the 50's, 60's, and 70's, and still should be today. His spending has doubled the national debt, rising it to $20 trillion. However 0bama has slashed NASA while throwing billions away on dubious crony green projects and social programs.
NASA never got on the ball with anything else, got ambitious with Orion and futzed around (and Congress funds stuff, not the president) so the shuttle went out of service before they got a new vehicle into service. Now we're here.
Obama told NASA to go to Mars. They didn't accomplish it. Now we seem to be on a private track, hence this series' focus on the SpaceX stuff. Too bad, really.
Although I respect your opinion I must disagree with your notion that Earth should be our only home because of comfort and luxuries it affords. Catastrophic events which have occured many times in the earth's history, such as asteroid impact, sudden mass volcanic activity (rendering our atmosphere unbreathable), coastal tsunamis, and even bio-threats, all line up in insisting that we be killed sooner or later. Yes, our entire species is threatened by such events which could happen tomorrow. Our emerging space technologies can help us at least mitigate this threat by setting up camp on Mars. If you look really long term, then you will appreciate that our planterary neighbor, Mars, can and should be exploited as our second home (perhaps entire cities can emerge under the Martian surface) and who knows we may find wonders there in terms of resources, and ultimately, a creative, advanced secondary human civilization.
Hani, Well said. You hit the nail on the head. And don't forget the possibility of mankind's extinction on earth by a nuclear war. Btw, next time you might want to throw in a paragraph break. It would make your very intelligent post easier to read.
Scwalker, Also well said. Germany (along with other countries) is now paying dearly for its mistakes in allowing so many Muslim immigrants.
I am so effing sick of this god damned effing Bull$hit where kooks like Elon Musk (yes he is intelligent but he has a few screws loose too) think Mars can "replace" Earth as a "home" to the human race. To borrow a term from Star Trek Mars is NOT a "class M" planet and will never "replace" the Earth. If we screw up the Earth we are screwed and no way will Mars function as a "second Earth".
Mars lacks a magnetic field, is farther from the sun meaning COLD, has too little gravity, slightly more than a third Earth gravity. The only kind of world that could in the long term support human life needs to be close to Earth gravity. There is some wiggle room, 80 percent like Avatar or a little more like 160 percent the human body could adjust but Mars has just too little gravity.
I read your note to Scwalker and as a born Muslim, find your comments offensive! It's like saying we should deport blacks from America because most prison inmates and trouble makers are blacks.
Building upon the need to also build a sustainable and decent human civilization here on Earth, let's get along, learn from each other, and try to tackle problems not only terror, which is never justifiable, but also inequity, lack of justice, ignorance, and impunity.
rofl. why should i care about establishing a new earth when i cant take part in it? i dont give a damn about mars. if life gets eradicated on earth, im dead. its not like i will give 2 *beep* about that

And that right there is why humanity is doomed to extinction. This prevalent, growing concern with the advantage of self while disregarding the welfare of others is antithetical to the very concept of society, which must place more emphasis on the whole even when it is at the expense of the individual. Historically, America more or less did abide by this concept, for instance accepting the heavy rationing during WWII. That wouldn't fly today.
