What year is this?

I'm up to episode 5 of the first season and liking it so far.

I'm wondering what year this is supposed to be?

Are there any cultural references or movies playing or something that indicates a specific year?

I guess I'm answering my own question.

Looks like late 1973 / early 1974 based on reference to the Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs Battle of the Sexes Tennis match.

Another reference in S01E06 Goldie reading a paper says "Bonanza is cancelled".
The last episode of Bonanza aired Jan 1973. That doesn't jive with the King vs. Riggs comment from the previous episode. King vs. Riggs happened in Sept 1973.

So I'm just gonna go with roughly 1973 for the setting of this show.

Season 2 has to be in either '74 or '75 since the creation of Saturday Night Live is mentioned.

Yeah, in S02E05 Sid says to Goldie that their daughter Mandy wants to see the movie "Lenny"
Lenny came out in Dec 1974.

It looks like season one is 1973-1974, and season two is 1974-1975.

Which is funny because the events that inspired the show happened in 1979.

What events from 1979 inspired the show?

This show is based on an actual comedian strike that happened in 1979. Read the book 'I'm Dying Up Here'. Comedians at the Comedy Store went on strike for money.
