As if that's going to solve anything it's going to bring more eastern Europeans in to already flooded European countries.

Some (not all) of them want to join the European Union and be an EU country. They don't want to leave Ukraine. As of yet, they're an independent country with ties to Russia and of course, Pootin doesn't want to see that huge chunk of former Soviet Union territory go away so he's engineered a "frozen conflict" in order to lock Ukraine out of signing on with EU.
