I'm a guy and I liked this for what it was...

Although the movie is about self-acceptance, it's as much about having a tribe to call your own and that will always have your back.

It wasn't overly sentimental which was nice too. The humour was gentle and they avoided the 'mean girls' cliche.

Nor did Dolly Parton even appear in it which would have been an easy out for the writers and producers... you know, the big scene where the oppressed main lead meets their idol who imparts words of wisdom that inspires them to go on to great things. Wisely, they kept the movie grounded.
