I think it ran itself out in two episodes

Saw the first two episodes. I think I get it.

Over time she'll actually descend into killing people herself. Then she'll have to find a way of getting away with it all so she can get her politically-correctly-casted son back. She'll descend into drugs and alcohol and waver between the low life and the high with what's-his-name. At some time just before the series ends, he'll get killed, she'll get away, she'll have lots of money stashed away, her mother will die of lung cancer and she and her son will be reunited. Yawwwwwwnnnnn.

Producers should stop watching other TV shows before accepting projects like this. The premise on how she and... and... you know, that hit man get together was interesting. But why he didn't just drive her into the woods and plug her in the back of the head will remain a mystery.

The first two episodes were just drama gimmicks, gimmicks, gimmicks. No thanks.

I think someone wanted a female Quarry.

My Chimp DNA seems to have lost its password temporarily. Sluggr-2

Yeah, only this show is super unrealistic. Quarry is a piece of art compared to this...

Truth be told as much as I liked the first two episodes, I can see the series playing out how you predicted. I just really dig the noir vibe and the directing.

reply

Yes. I loved the two episodes so far, but I agree--where to take it, even in the unrealistic realism of a TV show? She seems genuinely distraught and horrified by the killings. Also genuinely attracted to the hit man. I'd rather not see her become a partner in his crimes, but how else can it go?

Too bad it couldn't have been a feature film.

reply

Michelle Dockery really sells the show and keeps me rooted for the character, but yeah the story seems to point in that general direction. At least I can't imagine much else.

Like you said, how else can it go?

What is interesting is that it's a turn off for me, even though it's quite possible that the writers take it somewhere completely different. It's not that I'm afraid the show is going to start to suck (could just stop watching then) but that it doesn't capture my imagination. So what I learn from this is that a show needs to keep the imagination open.

So lets hope that in the next episodes some things are going to be thrown up in the air that lets you imagine a more interesting long term story arc.

So i guess there are no junkie white chicks who end up having black babies? Totally set up for politically correct.. An ex con mother and father no name.. Ringing endorsement for diversity LOL

reply

The brief flashback of the son she wants to get back shows he's black, but she's probably not going to remain a drug user beyond the first episode. (I've only watched the first two, so far)

It reminded me a bit of Banshee, which I'm totally fine with and had far more implausibility with it's first two episode setup, than these first two eps.

I like flawed characters, and I like that we're seeing an female over 30 fill that role.

The only thing that is truly a mystery is how folks like you actually harp on far more about 'political correctness' than any actual SJW does. It's ironic. 😂

I'm okay with flawed characters but like others are saying on this thread, I don't see how it can last long term. It won't be long before the storylines seem phoned in or going in circles. Kinda like the past season of Bates Motel.

So, I watched the two new episodes. For a professional killer, this guy sure is sloppy as hell. I saw at least ten ways in which he is (they are) leaving bread crumbs to be found and followed directly to them. Cell phone usage (tower tracking), going to a fast food drive-through (cameras), even having an electric car that restricts his movement. Wow, talk about stupid. She pulls a gun on a guy, he practically panics after the rear-ender, they get into conversation after conversation with people that will now be able to identify them... and, as the TV news report said, they are persons of interest in the disappearance of the couple from the B&B right from the get-go. You don't need to watch much Forensics Files to know there is no chance of them getting away... but they will. And then there's the mother. What a turn-around she did, huh? From hateful to helpful in the span of 90 minutes.

I think from this point I'll let others tell me how it ends.

Taking the Tesla was to get rid of the people and their car... taking them and not the car would have raised alarms sooner about their whereabouts. Anyway, of course they do some dumb things... it's a tv show and normal criminals also do dumb things (and, usually, eventually get caught). He is clearly "smart enough" to have ideas about getting rid of bodies, but that doesn't make it smarter to drive around with them for hundreds of miles in a stolen car (than to ditch the bodies somewhere).

I think the mother was believable. People who love you can seem mean, but when you are really hurting, they may show their true feelings for you. She's her mother, after all. Her daughter may deserve criticism for being a screw-up, but when she's at rock bottom, is she not going to be there for her? Hateful to helpful, in family relationships, is not so unthinkable as to seem unrealistic...
