This show didn't go where I expected

I just finished binge-watching this. One thing I will say for it is that it's addictive. I also LOVE Letty (but that's no surprise as I loved Michelle Dockery before). And I really enjoy the other characters as well. Many of them start out feeling almost like parodies of stereotypes, but then become human later on, which was interesting to watch.

The show didn't go where I expected. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad - maybe a bit of both? Of course it's great to be unpredictable, but I wonder if the show can go on for very long when it almost doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It's possible the creators have a grand plan though, who knows. When it started out I was expecting it to be more of a crime thriller. I thought Letty's discovery of the husband killing his wife at the beginning would lead into some more complicated plot involving those characters, but nope, turns out they were just randoms and their only purpose was to introduce Letty to Javier. So she meets him, and he wants her to be his literal partner in crime. At this point I thought the show would follow that thread, with the two of them doing more jobs together and Letty eventually progressing from hit-accomplice to hit-woman. This seems to be foreshadowed when she says she doesn't want to kill anyone, and Javier says "you still haven't", as if that will soon change. But nope, the show doesn't go in that direction either. Instead we go off to see Javier's family. So, ok, at this point we know his father has "done bad things" in the past and that he has at least one relative (his brother in law) who has helped him out with body disposal. I thought it would be revealed that his estranged father is actually some kind of crime lord, and he has other family members involved in the criminal underworld, and this would then become the main plot. But none of this occurred.

At this point I am wondering where the show will end up, or if the writers even know. If the main plot is just Letty getting her son back, is there any room left in the show for her skills as a thief? For Javier's killing? He hasn't shown much interest in his "job" these past few episodes. I want to stay invested in this show but it feel like it's waffling and meandering with no real goal in sight.

I totally agree with your breakdown of where the show has gone.

At this point, for me...the shows redeeming value is that I enjoy the characters of Letty and Javier and I'd like to see them go somewhere far more interesting than what we've been seeing the last several episodes.

They may have erred by tackling some of its mystery early on (such as Letty and Javier's background) but I hope they can move away from the domestic angst for a while and figure out a way to still surprise us.

I think there's a good chance for a season 2 (especially given it's TNT) so we'll see if they're up to the challenge..

Yes, I feel the same about the characters. I hope there are still some surprises left! I really want this to stay good...

It looks like season one might be focused more on the introduction of characters and Letty's son. At least that's what it looks like. Most shows nowadays have 10 episodes each season and it already aired episode 9. I'm really hoping they renew the show for a 2nd season because I really want see where the characters go and hopefully have a new storyline. I'm excited.

It has to be renewed it produces some of the best numbers for the network.. and it also doesn't hurt the show is the best thing since Southland.. there's definitely going to be more stealing, killing and phukking in season 2 I'm just glad I saw the entire season uncut makes it a totally different show

I pretty much agree! I thought it would be more of a crime thriller. I want Letty and Javier to be at the center, no matter what, with end game of them together as a couple. I don't mind if there's some separation, but I want them to get back together. It was interesting to see Javier's job (even if it's a horrid thing). I think he's got plenty of money so he can afford to wait around for the job he wants to do and I also think he's interested in Letty, who doesn't like what he does, so he's willing to take a bit of a break for the time being. I thought it was very interesting that he wasn't going to put up with her stealing or behaving badly, despite what he does, and don't think it was merely because he doesn't want it impacting his work. I think they both see something broken in each other and they work. I totally ship them.

I hope the show is renewed and they get back together and even get on the road. I don't want them to be Bonnie and Clyde, but it made for an interesting show.
