I kind of like this show so far. The whole vibe seems to change from episode to episode The two leads are really quite good Michelle Dockery is beautiful and does a great job with an American accent except the slight lisp which is kind of sexy.
BUT
I really don't get the whole premise of why they are together. Javier kind of hijacked/kidnapped her out of her drug stupor and from there they have gone on these crime, family, murder adventures and a couple of times Javier just dropped her off for a while. There seems to be no logic in their being together for an extended period of time and they go from hating each other to humping like rabbits to a fraternal relationship to lovers Don't get me wrong I don't mind the lack of logic its just hard to figure out the dynamic.
Am I reading this show wrong or did I miss something ?
You're right to be confused i think because this relationship is still on the making and we get to watch how it "brews".I'll tell you my take on it.
The whole thing was initiated by Letty in a weird effort of "good" behavior to save Daphne and the whole dating and sleeping with him was probably a mixture of sexual attraction and the need for another adrenaline rush. After the pilot they both know the worst things about each other and are starting to connect through subtle situations while doing this "forced" teamwork.
What is made clear as the story progresses and especially the reunion and the family dinner episodes is that at the end of the day they have truly nobody in the world and do not feel close to anyone, leaving them in desperate need for any kind of understanding, acceptance and love. Since life brought them together in whatever means, they choose to hang on to each other (at least for now) certainly not from love yet, but because it seems like they provide a small ray of sunshine in each other's otherwise dark and painful reality.
They have no idea were they stand since both of them are afraid to commit to sth and i guess through various situations they will try to clear the dynamic in their own time. Clearly, the both have bigger things to worry about than their relationship status :P
I'm with you. I like the show a whole lot, but I don't get the premise either. Frankly, it's idiotic and patently unbelievable. I guess one is asked to suspend belief, which is okay by me.
Everything is a gross over-exaggeration: Letty is extra bad. Letty is extra pretty. Javier is extra evil. Letty's shoplifting is extra excessive, not to mention extra successful. Letty's clothes are extra nice (for a woman who was cleaning toilets in the beginning...and btw, that filthy toilet was EXTRA filthy). Her "expertise" in catching swindles and plots are extra improbable. Her mother (Estelle) is extra trashy. (But I just love the actress who plays Estelle.) Christian's creepy little toad of a boss is extra toady. Javier's family (father, anyway) is extra revengeful. Tiffany's husband's gay sex affair is extra sleazy. And so on and so forth...
There isn't a plot or character that is remotely believable or authentic in this show. Every time I watch an episode I feel like somebody's hitting me over the head with a sledge hammer, yet I really like it, and find it eminently watchable.
I agree with all you have stated 100%! I would also add to your list that she's abuses both alcohol and drugs but looks like "America's next top Model"
The whole premise is we are seeing this through Letty's eyes, so I just see it as everything is extra over the top because that's how Letty is seeing and feeling it
I wholly agree with you. And it's not just the relationship dynamic that's strange. Javier is a killer who cares about people? Even if he can successfully convince himself he's only killing bad people (which he isn't), the effect of that kind of job on that kind of person would inevitably cause some sort of psychological break. Christian's kind of off, too. He does stupid things for Letty and blames her; well, I can actually buy that. It's just that his motivation is incomprehensible. He knows he's not going to get anything out of it.
That said, it's still a good show. Letty's actions are understandable and it's interesting how they always make her situation worse.
If all else fails, immortality can always be assured by spectacular error.
I don't find it confusing at all. These two people are outsiders, both who live on the fringes of society, rejected by friends and family. Letty is a self-admitted thief and Javier, a contract killer. But the more they know about each other's lives, the more they've become supportive of the other, reinforcing a natural attraction.
These people are used to living life outside the norms of society.
I agree totally...not everything has to be spelled out...they are two broken souls...so who knows?...but the journey is very interesting...that episode Javier's Dad...some good acting all around...

FULLY AGREE. but would most people understand this? most people have very little imagination. and since we haven't personally been thieves, meth-heads or hired killers, then we wouldn't naturally empathize bc dude, i've been there man. no - we haven't been there, we don't get it by nature. we could easily get it, with a touch of putting ourselves in the others' shoes or letting our imagination run wild with the show. because it's very believable.
but keep on with your lack of imagination, folks. very sexy. very smart. wow!

uh...DUH. Javier is fully supporting Letty. He realizes that if she is responsible for Shawn's death, and Jacob eventually finds out (it happens, as we've seen), she will lose Jacob forever. He goes back, leaves the note on her pillow. He goes back to the motel...discovers that Letty has betrayed him.
The assertion I questioned was that they BOTH supported each other. That is not true. Letty did not support Javier in episode 9.
In any event I never said Javier BETRAYED Letty as you said I did.
The way Letty was in episode 9 contrasts with episode 7 and the conflict with Javier's family. But in hindsight her support there was not all that great. Sure she could have walked out and left him alone, but it didn't take all that much to stay with him. In other words I don't think her behavior in episode 9 stands in stark contrast with earlier behavior.
I'm only thru Episode 7. The show started really well (first 2 episodes), but seems to have got sidetracked with too many other back-stories. Javier needs some more "contracts"...and quickly, before you lose THIS viewer!
Letty and Javier are an unconventional couple. They're loners on the fringe of society. They finally found that one person who knows them at their worse and still sticks around. They complete each other and challenge each other. And yes they support each other. But at the same time things are just developing and it's not going to be smooth.
