Fleetwood Mac - Rumours!

Somehow "Go Your Own Way" was the perfect song for the perfect ending, even tho the meaning of it was the absolute opposite.

While reading the other threads for this show i was struck by a few things. In no particular order:

- Kind of more than a little bothered by the assumption that Letty *chose* to sleep with Sean, and the utter rejection by those posters of both the suggestion that she could have been drunk (have any of them guzzled that much vodka at once, because I have). Plus, I was extremely disturbed that so many also rejected what I thought was now accepted as fact; that an intoxicated woman could not legally consent to sex, which would make Sean a rapist after she said NO. Just ask Mariska Hargitay.

- The projections for the season finale were dire, based on what lots of those same judgmental people characterized as Letty's unforgivable behavior. But surprise! So just maybe she wasn't unredeemable, and they could be wrong about their other assumptions as well.

As far as Letty consenting to sex with Sean, even the producer and Michelle Dockery say that the two have a "chemistry" even though I don't think the viewers could accept that between the chemistry she has with Javier and the hatred she has for Sean. When they discussed this scene no one mentioned rape.

Letty has a very high tolerance for alcohol and nothing about her demeanor in that scene showed she was that impaired. Why open the hotel door with nothing but underwear on? Why open it at all? I think it was the writer's intention that Letty did consent to sex with Sean even though she weakly said "no." They wanted to portray her as flawed as possible in this episode and they succeeded.

The point was in the finale even with all her mistakes was that she did have redeeming qualities and Javier, Jacob, Estelle, Christian all forgave her. Improbable, yes. but hey it is a TV show.

First, feeling drunk and showing it, especially when, as you say, one has a high tolerance for alcohol, are often very different things. The science is clear: the human body can only metabolize so much alcohol per hour based on weight, whether or not someone "feels" drunk. That's one of the chief reasons for people committing DUIs. But that never stopped me as a teenager from brazenly denying to my mother that I'd been drinking, and getting away with it.

Still, according to current values and standards and not those of 1977, had I said no to an ex boyfriend under the same circumstances, who then proceeded to have sex with me anyway, even if I was dressed "provocatively", it would be sexual assault. Asking why Letty opened the door in her underwear is irrelevant, and in my opinion offensive. It neo be an accepted fact that all women have the right to say no at any time, and to be protected from sexual assault.

I know this is a fictional drama, but like all decent entertainment, it raises issues of real life. One of my favorite sayings is "You have the right to your own opinion. You do not have the right to your own facts". Some in society may accept that we are now in a post truth world. I do not. But some facts are more important than others, and especially now that we will in days have a U.S. president who is a self described misogynist and sexual assaulter, and who poses a clear and present danger to the rights, health and safety of all women, among others, hearing people debate the truth of such facts is very concerning to me.

Interesting. I didn't realize Bill Clinton was going to be President again.

I think that Letty slept with Sean to get in his favor. She feared she would lose Jacob the next day in the hearing. What better way to get on Sean's good side than to sleep with him? She uses sex instead of a credit card, whatever. They must have had some sexual tension and it was something she was familiar with. Letty had just returned to Jacob's life and she was terrified that their lives would change so much. I think Letty knew full well what she was doing with Sean.

I'm not going to go into the whole Letty/Sean thing here as I have in other posts.

I just disagree with the song choice. All the songs throughout the season have been different and interesting- most artists I have never heard of. While I love Fleetwood Mac, I thought the addition of "Go your own way" was really cheesy. The 99 Cents "Before the Fire" that played earlier in the episode while Letty was driving back from Javier's hotel would be a better choice personally (it was too upbeat for that scene). Glad you enjoyed it though. :)

I did, thanks, in a nostalgic way. And it was a cover. But I do see your point.

witchy,

You were extremely disturbed for no good reason. You strongly imply you condemn, on moral? political? grounds, those who did not share your take on the film. Guessed you missed the factors freemovie mentioned. The MAKERS OF THIS SHOW have publicly explained the Sean Letty encounter as about "chemistry", with no mention she was doing so because she was under the influence. Of course I don't know why even that take provided by he Exec Producer was necessary since Letty clearly was not legally incapable to consent. She had not gotten halfway through a bottle when she had been shown before drinking way more of that. Not everyone has the same tolerance, and there was nothing in Letty's behavior prior to opening the door to Sean that indicated she did not know exactly what she was doing.

Perhaps you should understand people better before you condemn them.

I understand rape can happen just because the person is intoxicated and saying no should mean no. But at the same time throughout tv/movie history there have been many drunk/resistant sex scenes that end up with the two people actually enjoying it, and falling for each other. That may well be a slap in the face to people who had a similar experience with a very different outcome. However this scene clearly (to my mind)was set up by the producers/writers to show that Letty and Sean had chemistry and she is a flawed character, not to show rape however wrong that may be. I didn't buy the scene and didn't enjoy and don't condone it but I also still don't think it was rape, but agree to disagree on that. Instead of it being rape I think instead it was showing how little control Letty has when she is down and ends up making things worse (self destructive)

"Instead of it being rape I think instead it was showing how little control Letty has when she is down and ends up making things worse (self destructive)"

The comments about "chemistry" to me mean that the show's writers and producers thought they were showing some kind of appeal going between Letty and Sean. That appeal certainly does not categorically exclude viewing her as lacking control. In fact the strength of such appeal can feel like one does not have control, or perhaps more accurately less control.

But I don't think the comments about chemistry fit with concluding that the sexual encounter was some kind of act of self abasement that resulted from Letty "feeling down". feeling down may have lowered her defenses somewhat, but does not explain why she engaged as she did in the sex.

Of course as I assume you know I think and you agree the chemistry angle is not plausible enough.

I instead think they put that scene in mostly for its prurient effect.

To be clear I do not object to prurience when it fits the narrative and makes sense. But the prurience here was both gratuitous and jarring because it did not fit with the overall narrative.

After it was revealed that Sean use to beat Letty (thought she was going to hit Estelle before Rob showed up) I really didn't see the chemistry Hodge talked about.

Add that to his post sex insult that she wasn't as good as she use to be/or as good as he remembered and I wouldn't be disappointed if Sean doesn't show up in the second season. What a loathsome guy. He and Letty had 'chemistry'? yeah. Bad chemistry. Jacob deserves better. I am glad he chose Javier too.

I so hope there is a second season.

reply

Of course Letty chose to sleep with Sean. Maybe she thought it would help her get Jacob. Anyway she's a trainwreck with a soft spot for self-distruction.

God forbid I'm not going to ask Hargitay anything. Not after the episode where a man was prosecuted for rape because he said he was a dean of a college or something and then had a consensual intercourse.

reply

I never said I "condemned" anything. I said I was disturbed. If I have to explain why further, it would be a waste of time and space. Anyone who needs to have it explained why watching a woman be, to neutralize the act as much as possible, "taken advantage of", then hear it be normalized, either can't or won't understand, so I won't try.

No, I didn't see the comment by the director. I didn't receive notifications about any of the responses between my last and this one. But just as these sites exist for us as viewers to air our opinions and interpretations about shows and movies, regardless of what writers or anyone else intended, I agree with the poster who said that Sean's violence against Letty and his verbally abusive comments to her changed the way she saw any attraction between them.

One last thing: it's sometimes hard to tell from usernames the gender of posters, so I apologize in advance if I'm wrong. But in general, I am also concerned about the seemingly increasing split between men and women on the definition of sexual assault/rape, as well as an ignorance about the lasting post traumatic effects of such attacks, even when the victim wasn't conscious for it, didn't herself recognize that it happened, or other similar circumstances. PTSD is not something that only happens in combat. This may be a controversial post, but in light of recent events and what I've been reading in comments, I feel it must be said. I believe the first amendment to the Constitution is still in force, at least for now.

reply

It may have already been posted but - I thought during the entire scene that Letty deliberately slept with Sean to maybe get back at Javier and meant for him to find out. Especially, when he did. Then later, it seemed like I was wrong. I don't know.
