Here's Why I Think This Show Is Completely Awful
Guys. Like many of you I have grown up with the books. They floored me as a kid and I have read the whole series 4 times by now I think.
But I thought both the movie and the show fail miserably, especially the show.
Alright. Here we go.
The first thing I should mention is this.. in my interpretation the books are 60% Drama and 40% Dark humour. Theres zero Drama in the show. And when I mean Dark Humour I mean Dark Humour. I dont mean fun and adventurous Wes Anderson kinda humour. Yeah, you can kinda argue that theres drama in the show. But it is just really innefective.
Second point. Count Olaf. Now theres a lot of discussion going on online about whether Olaf is an evil intimidating villain or a straight up goof. Theres discussion about this because he is BOTH.
Now its really important to understand that he is not simountanuosly both. He is, for the first half of the series a pure evil persona and the second half he becomes a flamboyant character with comedy. Now he doesnt change abruptly, but rather gradualy. And I think theres a reason for this. I think Daniel Handler wants to make him a metaphor for the evolution of the kids as human beings. In the end they no longer fear him. He is no longer a threat.
Now as a kid for the first couple of books I was super frightened of him. He was imposing, the smart kind of evil.
Obviously the show, just like the movie, ignores this. He is a clown from the beggining.
The other point (acting) is how innefective I thought this version of Count Olaf was. Neil Patrick Harris is insanely weak as him. Now the Jim Carrey version is also wrong in my book but Carrey was actually, for what he was going for, actually kinda brilliant. Carrey is an awesome performer and Harris clearly is only offered the role because he is popular I guess...
But the acting doesnt stop there. The only actor in the show I thought did good work was Joan Cusack.
Another thing. Why the fuck is Lemony Snicket narrating all the time? It fits to have that in the book because.....well... its a fucking book. This is an adaptation and the only reason Lemony is narrating is just so that the showrunners of the show can call the show "faithfull to the books"
At least if Wes Anderson was directing this we would get a much better result. It would be the wrong interpretation as far as Im concerned, but it would be effective.
Thats it guys. Those are my main problems with the show. The movie failed as well but at least there was some genuine dramatic moments in that.
So. Thats it. Thats my money on it.
