Education

I've never read the book so I can't comment on the accuracy of this film, all I know is I loved it. The one thing that puzzles me a little about the story is that Anne is delighted later in the film when she is told she will be going to school but all through the early stages she speaks like a highly educated girl.

I think that she is looking forward to the interaction with other kids her own age, rather than the 'schooling'.......

You are probably right but still makes you wonder where given her previous lifestyle how she learned all her big words and phraseology.

reply

She read a lot as a child, that was her escape from the abusive people in her childhood.

reply

A good suggestion but if she had no schooling who taught her to read.

I read "Before Green Gables" only once because it was so sad, but I do remember that the author wrote that as much as Anne loved school, she did not go often because of her duties helping with the three sets of twins.

It's her imagination and quick wit that makes her seem educated. In those days children's vocabularies were extensive. Reading the original book I always marveled at the high reading level of it when I knew it was a children's book one hundred years ago.

Thanks for the info, as I said in my post the story is not really aimed at people of my age and gender, I watched it mainly because I had heard of the book but never read it or knew much about it, but have to say I really enjoyed it.

You should watch the 1985 version that stars Megan Follows.

reply

I have just watched it, I'm not going to say I didn't like it but I much prefer the Ella Ballentine version, firstly Ella was the right age to play an 11 year old, at 17 years old Megan Follows was way to old to play Anne. I have never read the book but from what I've heard Ella's version is more accurate. I suppose at the end of the day though you always tend to prefer the first one you see.

I believe Megan was actually 16 when she played Anne. That version, like the book, dealt with Anne aging from 12 to 16. It's not an easy task for a 12 year old to play a 16 year old but it is easier for a 16 year old to play a 12 year old.

I've been trying to figure out the timeline in this AoGG. It seems like a year or less elapses in the movie. A lot is left out in this movie and the timeline is out of order in places.

reply

You may be right, I only saw part one which covers much the same part of the story as the 2016 film. I know from the synopsis I read of the book she was supposedly 11 years old when she arrived at GG.
