Robot Wars UK is ready to rock again!

Robot Wars UK is ready to rock again after a 13 year absence. It starts on BBC 2 on 24th July. Like Battlebots, it never gets much publicity, hopefully anyone outside the UK will be able to catch it on iPlayer or some other way. Pretty cool it will be on the same time as Battlebots! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03h7r7n &

Arright! I'll be looking for it, here in the U.S., but I reckon I'll have to wait until some viewers transport it to youtube.

- What are you gonna do, when the world catches on?

Cool man. Yeah I have been watching Battlebots on Youtube, but they really have to mess around with it to get past the DRM detections. I find it strange that there's no torrents of the new series going around yet. Not that I've found anyway.

There are plenty of torrents for the new series, usually uploaded no more than a few hours after the episode airs.

Good, I'll look harder

only first 3 episodes are out.

OK, I have discovered that the new eps are all on p1rat3bay, but for some bizarre reason are all titled as Battlebots 2015, so I presumed they were last year's. I guess there's a reason for that?

To differentiate the new series from the old one. It's standard to use the premiere year in the name if there's already a property with the same name.

Aaaaaahhhhhhh! gotcha

I doubt they would have it on BBC America they just have top gear 24/7

The new UK series got off to a good start! I'm glad they didn't change the format too much and the new presenters were good, Dara (the guy presenter) was funny! Compared to Battlebots, there's a lot more robot action screen-time and less talk which is great!

reply

Come on, I watched the new Robot Wars episode for a bit, but it is so bad and boring in comparison to Battlebots. I just can't watch it.

What don't you like about it? They are quite different, I like them both and they have different qualities.

In Robot Wars, I like:
- A lot less talk and a lot more screen-time given to fighting. For example, in the most recent eps; Battlebots' fight time 7mins. Robot Wars' fight time 16mins
- The arena has more hazzards (the pit, the flipper, spikes, the house robots etc) but the potential unfairness of this is offset by the fact that all four bots per round get the chance to fight all four of the other bots, with a points system.
- Presenter Dara is Irreverently funny (he's a comedian here in the UK).

In Battlebots I like:
- The robots are generally bigger, more powerful and more advanced (so far). More destruction.
- The builders are more interesting and varied; more nationalities involved and more girls involved for instance.

I think that some people don't/won't like it simply because of it's tone. American versions tend to be louder, flashier and with bigger personalities. Just look at Gordon Ramsay's UK and US versions of Kitchen Nightmares :D

For me personally, it felt a bit weird watching it because of how quiet it seemed and it'll take some getting used to. Which is a really strange, considering I've only seen the new Battlebots series, while I've seen the entire old run of Robot Wars.

Indeed, there are a lot of differences between what US viewers expect of TV productions and what UK viewers expect. Living in the UK, I have been brought up on a roughly equal mix of shows from both countries so I am comfortable with both. On a purely personal level I can relate to the personalities of the UK presenters/contestants better, but the larger than life presentation of Battlebots is also very entertaining. I'm glad that both exist and that they are different.

Although I prefer BattleBots, I enjoyed the first episode of Robot Wars. Dara Ó Briain is good. Never heard of the woman. The tone of the two shows is very different. RW seems very subdued compared to BB. One thing I didn't much care for on RW was inter-cutting the replays during the actual fight. It seemed to take the steam out of the ongoing action. Maybe that's why the battles seemed to have more screen time.

I guess that adds a few seconds but it doesn't account for almost 10 minutes more fight time. There are more fights in RW, 7 compared to 4 in BB. I love the fights in BB but find myself Fast forwarding some of the flim flam in between. There's an inordinate amount of time in the build-up to a BB fight, a couple minutes of wheeling-on, announcing, whooshing sounds and light shows...I prefer the way RW gets down to business quickly. The show has better pacing over-all.

reply

I really don't see much difference in the build-up time between the two shows. Remember, RW is a full hour long, being commercial free. BB is only about 41 minuets long, minus the commercials.
