Ladybug bot

It won, ug

Don't read further if you haven't seen the fight.

I can't believe they gave the decision to it. I mean, the bot is next to useless, except for 3 inches of upright spinner on its back side. I get that this smaller bot (Stinger) lost a wheel, but it was clearly more aggressive. It wasn't an exciting fight and now we have to watch it again. Basically, this was a terrible match up. Stinger never stood a chance to flip a wide and heavy bot, but still moved it around the ring. It even got it to the useless hammer. Furthermore, it's not like the ladybot even drove its tail end into Stinger, the spinner only connected when the smaller bot drove into it. That was so frustrating. Sorry, just had to rant about that battle, I would have loved to have seen some of the other fights mentioned instead of this one.

edit: didn't proofread and caught some autocorrects that changed the words. Also added the name of the other bot (thanks joen0411).

I agree with everything you said

Yeah that bot sucks. The big plastic red portion is useless so I was hoping part of it would get melted off but it didn't. Stinger was a beast and hyper aggressive, even ramming that stupid bug up against the wall. So what if it lost one wheel, that's part of the design, why it has six, so it can keep going because a loss of one or two is expected. Watch the behind the scenes video of the driver, he buys those things in bulk knowing they'll get torn off easily. One wheel gone is hardly enough damage to count as a loss when it was dominating the entire fight.

Totally agree that it was a controversial but pick any of the following reasons why she got the decision:

1. Historical fan favorite bot
2. Stinger lost some wheels
3. Need to keep her in competition to encourage women in STEM etc.

Already said in several way, but yeah, I felt Stinger should have it. Other than showing little damage by the end, Mega Tento wasn't effective. Even with knocking a wheel off, MT was usually on the losing side of the pushing fights.

Stinger has 6 wheels. Losing 1 isn't a big deal. The judges should have realized that.

exactly, with 5 wheels it was still pushing that huge bot around.

reply

I saw Mega Tento pushing Stinger around just as much as vice versa. I don't think they award points for that anyway. Everyone seems to think Stinger should have won, but I don't see what Stinger did that deserved the win. I admit it was a close match. I think the judges made the right call.

The wheel was maybe no big deal, but Stinger did nothing to damage Mega Tento.

reply

Stinger was aggressive with his fire. It didn't wound it, but it's still more than the MT did to Stinger. If ramming doesn't score points then MT had nothing since all it could do was back into Stinger and ram him. At least Stinger had the fire as a weapon to fall back on. I saw a video of the old version of Stinger vs the old version of Tombstone I think, and the fire did a lot of damage and won him the match. He can be a really aggressive bot which surprises me the fire didn't hurt MT at all, even though it's seemingly made of hard plastic.

reply

You are all forgetting Stinger's minibot, which became completely disabled. This also counts as damage, because it's part of the overall mass of the contender. It was a mistake to use it. It failed to melt the bug dome, and got taken out. Stinger was aggressive and pushed MT around more in the first half of the match, but lost because it inflicted no damage, its flipper flipped itself instead of its opponent, it lost a wheel, and its minibot was taken out. The split decision was fair. You can't complain about bad match ups. If you are not versatile, you had better be devastatingly destructive.

That IS a tasty burger!

reply

That is a very valid point about the minibot and you're right, I forgot all about it. So, I can see why the judges did give the decision to MT. Even though MT won, it is still a terrible bot and shouldn't be one of the bots we see fight. Unless the other bot destroys MT, it's part of the fight will always be boring.

reply

totally agree about MT. Although it survived this fight, it'll likely be demolished in later rounds, whereas Stinger might have provided a little more competition for the heavy hitters.

A travesty

Tento is useless, can beat anyone without judges bailing it out, and receiving underserved wild cards

They got out of there way, to match it up with non spinners , smaller bots.

reply

I was thinking the same thing about how Mega Tento "lucked" into a bracket position where it didn't have to face a top seed early on. Looked awfully suspicious that it got a higher seed than Poison Arrow for example. If MT had been seeded between 27 to 32 (more reasonable for wild card) we wouldn't still be watching that bot now. Imagine what Minotaur would have done to it.

Another undeserved high seed was Ghost Raptor. He had his butt kicked big time in the qualifying round and "still" got a mid pack seeding (18 IIRC) as a wild card. I know reputation and crowd popularity go a long way. But that was shown to be a joke as he got destroyed in the round of 32 as well. He did NOT deserve the seeding he received.

Wild cards should not be given any seed higher than the bottom 8 of 32. I would say they should automatically get the lowest seed positions but I realize the committee needs some leeway in order to account for oddball fights or unexpected events. But in most competitions wild cards are given a low spot and have to "work" their way to victory.

reply

I never liked the ranking since none of it makes sense. If they do a ranking they should stick to their win loss record. Like Biteforce ranked #1 and Tombstone Ranked #2 etc and the newer bots should just be unranked.

reply

Yeah I don't like it either. Ranking the bots subjectively leaves open a lot of opportunities to tweak contests to give favorites an advantage.

While this would have flaws, I would suggest rankings in order:
Fastest KO, then
Widest margin of points victory, then
Smallest margin of loss (wildcards), then
Longest to be KO'ed (wildcards)

Take subjectivity out as much as possible. If a bot wants a high seed, they have to fight for it, not just be a fan favorite.

reply

That would make sense. Also they should take into account for the previous season as well like the top 8.
