How to tell the difference between legitimate questioning and conspiracy theory

Here's how you can tell when someone is being legitimately questioning and when they're just a crackpot. Crackpots always use the exact same talking points, whether we're talking about JFK, the moon landing, 9/11, etc.

1. "WHAT THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO SEE/KNOW/HEAR"
Crackpots will often take photos, footage or other things that have been floating around for decades but fallen out of obscurity, post them, and claim that this stuff has been out of the public eye because "THEY" (Illuminati, Jews, One World, Freemason, US gov't) have been trying to hide or delete them or censor them: https://crispian-jago.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-conspiracy-theory-flowchart-they.html

2. "THE REAL TRUTH/THE UNTOLD TRUTH BEHIND..."
Crackpots will take an event that is common knowledge. but claim that the information they post contradicts the common knowledge, because it is the "real" truth, not because it is just plain factually incorrect. For example, it's not that it's complete bullshit that the Titanic was purposely sunk as part of a massive conspiracy involving the Federal Reserve; it's that this was hidden the entire time and now you're being told "the real truth" or the "untold truth" about it.

3. "YOU ARE SHEEPLE/BRAINWASHED/SWALLOW EVERYTHING YOU READ"
Any debunking of the lies being told by a conspiracy theorist can be dismissed as you being one of the "sheeple" who just swallows anything you read and doesn't "question reality."

4. "EXPERTS ARE PART OF THE CONSPIRACY"
Experts debunking conspiracy theories--people who have credentials a mile long and professional experience lasting decades--can be discredited as being members of the cabal. For example, medical experts explaining why it's not true that vaccines cause autism are said to be being paid by Big Pharma. Archaeologists explaining why the aliens didn't build the pyramids are part of the Roswell cover up.

5. "DISCREDITED MEMBERS OF THE CONSPIRACY MOVEMENT ARE ALSO PART OF THE CONSPIRACY"
If an avowed member of the conspiracy is proven to be a charlatan, it's not that he's a charlatan; he's a plant who was put there to discredit the movement. So, for example, Alex Jones is really a CIA plant to make QAnon look foolish.

Any time you hear one of these talking points, look out! It's a conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theories are like Mad Libs. There are a preset set of talking points; it's just a matter of filling in the blanks.

I have to say that’s one of the best posts I’ve ever seen online. Your points are concise, compact and compelling. You impress me.

I am often struck by how the truth can be explained in few words, but bullshit requires reams of rhetoric, plus footnotes, sidebars and appendices.

PS Gotta say this: frigging Spellcheck wants me to write “appendixes.” Sheesh! Latin, much?!

That's how the game is played. Very little factual information, all persuasive and manipulative language.

Bravo Atomic. The list goes on and on.
REVERSAL OF BURDEN OF PROOF
For example I try to force 911 "truthers" to give me, what they think, is a consistent timeline of events from that day, rather than claiming everything from the "official" version is a lie. Something that would qualify as an actual theory.
To this day it hasn't happened.

reply

Yes, "Reversal of Burden Proof" is definitely one.

My favorite examples: "Prove that the moon landing isn't a hoax!" or "Prove that the parents of the Sandy Hook shooting aren't crisis actors."

Each a few years old, but enjoyable nonetheless:

Why do people always post links? What does that even mean? Can't anyone speak for himself anymore? Do you agree or disagree with those videos? This is so confusing.

reply

Agreed. I don't post 'em, and I'm sure as hell not clicking on 'em, either.

reply

You find video links to YouTube, LiveLeak, and Bitchute threatening?

Really??

Man that seems paranoid.

But, good move genius, according to the criminals at the FBI, there might be terrizzists hiding behind those links.

You passed the test!

reply

I'll break it down for you since you're struggling.

The preface sentence fragment in the post indicates exactly why the links were posted - entertainment relative to the subject matter of the original post.

The response was to AtomicGirl, not you.

Although I welcome the contribution of others, it helps if one actually has something of interest to contribute.

Bitching and whining doesn't count, so you might want to work on that.

I stand corrected

Zactly. All conspiracy theories are dumb/wrong. All conspiracy theorists are idiots.

One words proves my statement and yours completely W R O N G.

Epstein.

Nice try.

reply

We've sure got some big thinkers on this board...
Ok, so because there is possibly something wrong with the official suicide version of Epstein's death, ALL conspiracy theories ever made are true.
Brilliant.

It’s not just this topic. It’s not just this site. It’s pretty much the whole world. The phrase “common sense” became inaccurate about 20 years ago.

Remember that exactly 50% (minus one person) of the population are below average intelligence.

Conspiracy theories are fun but stupid. They make for some cool scripts/stories but the real life adherents are embarrassing. I knew a guy who was reasonably intelligent who would show me a folded dollar bill image as proof that 911 was an inside job. I know another person with a masters degree who believes in chem trails. My opinions of them suffered.

Great list Atomicgirl! I am not often in agreement with you so it's nice to read such a beautiful post from you.
