Question for British viewers

I noticed that the characters and people in general seem to have a song for every occasion. There was a lot of singing in the series with everyone joining in. This is pretty cool, but I was wondering if it was accurate. Do people in Britain join in songs together a lot, or is this a thing of the past. Again, I think it is cool, and am in no way trying to be disrespectful, just neat how they seem to have a song for every occasion and everyone knows the words to join in. Was just curious if this was an accurate portrayal.

It's more a thing of the past I think. For example in the episode where Mountbatten retires, his co-workers all sing both verses of Auld Lang Syne - in a typical London office nowadays, people would be unlikely to know even the first verse, let alone two.

That said, Brits still do know a few songs for various occasions, but it's less common now. Part of it is to do with multiculturalism but also the fragmentation of popular culture so that people only know the latest pop song rather than timeless songs.
