Just binged the series, and that was an expected view for centuries. Europeans looked down on their colonies as subservient vassal states, whom would have been far worse off had England never Incorporated them into the empire. And while there is a shred of truth to this, it's also a viewpoint of cultural, spiritual and racial domination and superiority that most Europeans were guilty of since the Roman empire.
Not just Europeans. The Chinese still have the same attitude towards the rest of the world, just look at how they officially talk to other nations (an opinion steeped in a three thousand year history, and from once being the "center of the world"). Americans inherited this from Europe, eventually with Manifest Destiny. And ALL people, of all races, generally look at their rivals as less cultured, less intelligent, etc. It's a human condition, that was magnified by European world conquest, and was intentionally placed in the show to detail this history, and how the English looked at their colonies (even though many of them, like Indie, had cultures that far pre-dated the English in history and color).
