What attacked the sub in the beginning?

From a previous discussion, what attacked the sub in the beginning that Statham was rescuing people from because only later do they inadvertently create a warm hole for the sharks to escape through?

Later when the blonde lady and 2 fat guys go down in the sub through the ice cold layer they engage the huge creatures for the first time and then the 2 sharks escape.

It could have been explained as something else like the sub inadvertantly going through a minefield and leaving his crew there was the only way for Statham to save the rest.

I feel like the only logical explanation is that there was something ELSE in the water and Statham really did have a panic attack totally unrelated to the Meg.

Statham having a panic attack in a submarine might be a better movie.

i'd watch it

I think they state that the sub was really deep down. That’s why they needed Jonas for the new rescue because he was the only one with experience doing a rescue at over 10,000 feet deep or something like that.

So it’s possible they were at a depth a Meg could get too. Also it’s possible one had gotten out before all this but stayed at a deep level rather than going into shallower waters.

It’s a semi decent set up for future movies as well. Since it showcases that the incident that released two sharks wasn’t a one off and obviously something had happened before where one got out.

Could be, I can see that as a reason. It could also have been a giant squid or something that could grow that big but stays hidden in the depths.

Why on Earth does it matter? The narrative needed a mechanism to set the action in motion. Okay: let’s stipulate that it was attacked by a rogue Merman and move on. Sheesh!

Given the context I don't think I would've assumed they were attacked by anything at the beginning. Maybe something malfunctioned or the crew wasn't prepared so the sub went down and they needed to be rescued.

reply

They refer to the attack in the beginning as an attack. Stathams character even says 'he knew it' when they eventually find out about the shark, so he thinks that he was right and they were attacked in the beginning even though the doctor told him he was wrong.

Were the group at the beginning under the icy layer keeping the megladon at bay or the smaller megladon? If they were below the layer they still could've got attacked by the same thing, they just may not have escaped the first time.

reply

They were deep but not under the ice level
