How do they have an adult daughter living in a nice house across the country but only been together 20 years?

Are you needing the birds and the bess explained?

Their daughter could be 19 living in a sorority house on or near college campus.
She could have married an older guy who has money.
Or her parents are unreliable storytellers.
Or the writer made a goof.

I hear you, OP! I think they cast two fairly young actors for the roles of Maxine and Frank. They should have cast older actors.

The actress playing Maxine was two years older than CCB, and Frank was the same age.

How old was CCB supposd to be in this film?
