How long after the pandemic/apocalypse started do you think the movie was set in? At first viewing, I thought maybe it was a year or two because of how entrenched they seemed to be with their lives at that point. But now I'm thinking maybe it was just a couple months at most. But before I tell you why, I'd like to know what your theories are... Thanks!
I suspect it was at least two years or three years after the pandemic hit.
I’m comparing the movie pandemic to Covid. We didn’t understand it and were frightened about loved ones and ourselves getting sick. I was so scared of others that I stopped going outside for packages until the driver drove away. Even then I was once of those who wiped down packages before opening them. Lol Our fear made sense when it came to survival.
The main family had a good place to survive and it would have taken a good while to build it and gather supplies. Plus I’m sure the main father would have done the gathering of supplies by himself and kept his family inside for their safety. The red door and tunnel like entrance to me made it look like the home was underground so the only way in or out was the red door. This also shows it took a lot of work to build the home.
When the other family shows up they are questioned about their history and where they stayed to survive. Again this to me shows at least a year or two after the pandemic.
The death of grandpa and the dog show a passing of time so it’s possible from the beginning to when the other family shows up it could be the passing of a year or so. Also the beginning dragged on and on with boredom. Remember how bored we all got during lock down?
This is just my thoughts on the movie. The movie was so boring but I had to watch to the end.
Hi - Big fan of the movie...and I actually think it wasn't all that long since the pandemic (or, likely, the tainting of the water supply) happened. Glad someone finally answered so I could post my two cents, lol! Before I begin, I'd like to add that the house was Grandpa's house. The family simply boarded the windows and secured the site.
I think we're talking maybe a few weeks since the event began. A few clues/hints...
Early in the movie, the dad says to the mom "Everything is going to be ok"...and she said "You don't really believe that...do you?". I think, if this event was something that they were years into, there would no longer be a discussion of whether or not everything was going to be OK.
The 2nd family dad (Christopher Abbott) said they were running out of water. The 1st family had a water-cleansing procedure that they showed to the 2nd family. So the 2nd family didn't know how to clean the water initially. It's unlikely they had years of water on-hand before the father set out to find more. If the 2nd family didn't know how to cleanse the water, and the dad was out searching for water, they quickly ran out of water after the event. Probably a week or two.
The dad of the main/1st family (Joel Edgerton) was, of course, VERY concerned and protective of his family. I think the paranoia/fear would be strongest at the beginning of the event. The precautions he was taking was of someone who was scared and wasn't accustomed to this. Also, he certainly perked up when the 2nd dad mentioned having food/animals. If he didn't have a food supply already, they were living off a limited supply of cans.
When both dads went to go get the 2nd family, they killed two people in a shootout. Christopher Abbott's character got upset with how quickly Edgerton killed the last guy...saying they "could have gotten information from him". If you're still in the information-gathering stage, it's probably still quite early in the process.
Interesting points, but I think it feels to me like longer than just a few weeks. A few months, at least. Everyone seems to have a fear of encountering other people, both out of fear of infection or fear of being robbed/killed. I don't think this would develop in just a few weeks time.
