Howard wasn't a saint either
I've been reading a lot of posts about how his friends were the worst people either, and yes their strategy was obviously rather deplorable, but let's be fair: Howard had obviously gone through the worst thing anyone could ever go through, and his mind had mostly gone...he knew this and yet he was quite willing to let his own grief bankrupt his friends and put a lot of people out of work. Remember that before Witt came up with his plan it is discussed numerous times how they tried reasoning with him, it's even shown how they tried, they explained to him that with his interest gone the business was failing, and he just brushed them off. They gave him two years, I know that was nothing to him, but the unfortunate reality is, no matter what you go through, life around you goes on. Sam's character, for instance, obviously he had some major stuff to deal with of his own, and people are judging him for putting his family's needs before his loyalty to Howard? Bottom line, everyone deals with grief in their own way, and if Howard needed time, even years, to deal with his pain, that was totally fine, but it was still unfair of him allowing the lives of everyone around him, people depending on him, to crumble, just because he no longer cared enough to face his other responsibilities.
