Seeing this film, looking at how beautiful the Lovings were as people, and how great they get on as a family, I unfortunately couldn't help but be reminded of the film Jungle Fever. I saw somewhere that the reason why Spike Lee directed that movie was not to show the difficulties of being an interracial couple, but it was created out of anger at his father, who remarried a white woman after his own mother passed away.
The film is garbage and the main character is a total loser. Lee obviously cast aside the story of the Lovings, and what they fought for and for how long they fought simply to remain a family, and spawned out his hatred for interracial relationships with Jungle Fever. He didn't even bother to read up on how good and kind the Lovings were. He's nothing but a bitter old man who still hasn't resolved his issues.
The film Loving is very empathetic with no bias, and, without being too preachy, shows us the true nature of love and why it's worth fighting for.
First of all, JUNGLE FEVER is one of Spike's best films ( I can say that because I've actually seen it when it came out) and it has really nothing to do with this new film at all, other than dealing with an interracial couple. I disagreed with Spike's animosity toward the interracial couple in the film, since I have some in my family, and I had my issues with the film. But the two films are entirely separate creatures, flat-out---they really have nothing in common. His film wasn't even about the Lovings---it was about many different issues from within. Plus spike has nothing to do with this film anyway. But there are other films about interracial marriages--you act like Spike made the only one---LOVING has nothing to do with him, anyway. I mean, come on. I'm also tired of people bringing up his name just to slam him. I 'n also tired of white folks thinking all black folks act and think alike when that is not even anywhere near the case at all. Tired of people throwing black folks all into the same group as if we're just supposed to all think and act alike. Newsflash---we DON'T, and never have. Just like all white people don't agree on everything, all black people don't agree on every damn thing, either.
And if you'd read up on Spike, he said the main reason he couldn't stand his white stepmother because his father married her so shortly after his mother's death---he and his siblings didn't even have time to grieve before their dad brought this other woman into their home. That's what was behind the movie, not just because she was white. Interestingly, he discovered recently through some TV show that hes got white relatives--I'd better look that up, lol.
@activista I think it's still up debate whether Jungle Fever was one of his best films or even whether it was a good film. But I have to admit I get annoyed whenever people try to make excuses for his overtly bigoted behavior. Sorry, but there is no denying that the dude has issues.
If white ppl were willing to accept their past and not have this struggle with looking perfect and acting perfect, but being hateful and perpetuating racism at home it would b a dif world You can't be perfect and indifferent at the same time. Looking fit on the outside doesn't make on a perfect human being. No I don't need a thesaurus, they need a clue.
