Mildred Loving identified as Native American, not black
Apparently, Mildred never identified as African-American.
In a 2004 interview, she said:
I am not black. I have no black ancestry. I am Indian-Rappahannock. I told the people so when they came to arrest me.
In a 2016 interview, Mark Loving, her grandson, said:
I know during those times, there were only two colors: white and blacks, but she was Native American; both of her parents were Native American.
On Mildred and Richard's marriage license, it states that her race is "Indian."
But at the same time, Bernard Cohen (one of the lawyers) said, "She always insisted that she was black."
I'm just surprised that Loving didn't address Mildred's racial identity or the fact that she was mixed race. Mildred clearly indentified strongly with her Native heritage, and it's not even mentioned in the film.
