shareWhy does every American 13 year old have detailed knowledge of the Holocaust, but very few adults even know about the Holomodor?
shareFor the same reason they know much more about Shakespeare than about Pushkin, or only know about Tchaikovsky through "The Nutcracker". Americans are much more familiar with European history in general than the history of what we'd now call the former Soviet bloc, and it's been that way for a long, long time.
shareBECAUSE THAT'S THE WAY THEY WANT IT! EUROPEAN GENTILES ARE HATED, & THE SLAVS ARE VERY MUCH HATED BY THEM TOO:(

1) Because of the huge immigration into the US c. 1900-1914, many, many new Americans had family who died in the Holocaust.
2) American soldiers liberated some camps, and made motion pictures documenting them, so American had direct visual connection to the Holocaust.
3) The Soviet Union for most of its existence controlled information so tightly that the United States had little knowledge of what went on there.
4) During World War II, to overcome American hostility to communism, the government propagandized that our new Soviet allies were just like us--they enjoyed freedom of religion, even, according to the propaganda spread in books and movies like Mission to Moscow.
