Interesting Film but Needed More

Denial was a decent film, but it came up a little short. The strongest part of the film was when Wilkinson interrogated Spall in court, but there were only two or three scenes where that happened. The facts of the case were more interesting than the characters involved and they should have leaned more heavily on them. And that's not just because the main protagonists were a slightly unlikable. The lawyers were made to seem like they were sabotaging the case, and even though they were correct in their strategy, their conflict with the main character made them appear to almost be another antagonist. Wilkinson is such a likable actor so he evades this a little bit, and the scene where he goes over to speak to Weisz's character helped, but the conflict distracted from the primary thrust of the film. And as for Weisz's character, her character is a bulldog in a muzzle. It's hard to really care for a protagonist that has no power, and her characters abrasiveness is not the most appealing characteristic (but maybe I'm just a wimp). The whole movie I was waiting for her turn to speak - to make a difference - and it never really came. I also expected the survivors to get a chance to speak.

Anyways, the lawyers said the facts of the case would be what allowed them to win. If they stuck to that, it probably would've made a better movie too. Still good. Still interesting. But needed a little bit more.
