Maybe seeing Trunks fuse god-ki with his super saiyan ki gave Vegeta an idea on how to ascend to a more potent level of power. Trunks has never mastered, or even used god-ki before, Vegeta has, plus his super saiyan abilities are up there with Goku's. So if Vegeta can find a way to properly merge the two ki's, it could be a pretty spectacular transformation. That's what might push Black and Zamasu to fuse. Whatever happens, I doubt he went in there just to train, Vegeta has an idea of his own.
