I'm bingeing S2 now. I like it better than S1, especially the first episode (the Thief) and the "I love new York" episode.
Many of the episodes are homages to different movies.
The Thief is an homage to 'The Bicycle Thief'/
I Love New York has a similar structure to 'The Phantom of Liberty'. Where it follows one story for a while and then switches to a different story as the characters pass in the street. 'Slacker' also comes to mind using that same 'pass the baton' structure.
I liked the first season, but the second is awesome. I didn't remember S1 being in widescreen format, but I noticed it right away in Season 2. I think it gives a dramatic weight to what's going on - makes each episode feel more like a Woody Allen movie. The directing is amazing...I love how they take time to let emotions of the characters sink in -- like the lonely cab ride home, the art park sequence where the long shot shows that they are the only people in the world - they are living in a private space.
I like how they get around and they're not confined to just a few apartment and studio sets. The whole series just has a big feel to it. Sometimes Aziz's corny singing and mugging bug me, but overall he's good.
It does have a cinematic feeling to it, much more than season 1. They must have a bigger budget. They have some more big names too like Angela Basset in 'Thanksgiving', and different small cameos like John Legend.
I was going to mention that cab ride! Most shows would end that scene 20 seconds sooner, but I loved that they kept the camera running and showed so many emotions going over Dev's face, the non-verbal acting was so great in that scene. he shows that he can be good when he's not mugging like you mentioned, when he's not 'trying too hard' he can be still and still convey so much.
I just realized that they foreshadowed the season finale in the Italy wedding episode.
sharei'm at the midway point of S2 and love it so far. the italian girl is lovely and this season is more interesting than season 1.
