Shaking hands with women...
Re: Handshakes
In the feminism episode, the women were put off because the director did not offer to shake their hands. In the USA, men were trained not to shake hands with women unless the women extended their hands first. It's considered rude for a man to touch a woman unless she consents, so this old rule is meant to protect women, not hurt them. (In a political documentary from the 90s, presidential candidate Bob Kerry is seen chastised by a woman voter for not knowing it's rude to try to shake hands with a woman.)
In the US business world, men will now extend hands to women in professional situations, but it's still not clear if that should happen in social situations.
In this episode it was a social situation, and the women sat there and did not offer their hands or signify they were open to shaking hands. Then they bitched about it afterwards.
So, ladies, if shaking hands is in order and the man in front of you is older than Aziz Ansari, you might need to lift or extend your hand a little so the man knows it's okay to shake hands with you.
I watched all the episodes of this show and thought it was pretty good.
