Looks completely inaccurate, based on the trailer.

Short Term Conflict Alert (STCA) was not online at Skyguide that night, because the primary radar was offline for maintenance, and STCA was not available on the backup system. However the trailer represents an STCA warning seconds before the accident (it would have warned much sooner than that, had it been operational).

Peter Nielsen (no doubt not his name in the movie) was not tossing off, drinking coffee as if on a break, during the events. He was distracted by another unscheduled flight, and unable to resolve the issues with it because the phone system was being worked on and the backup phone system had a technical problem and was disabled. He was also working alone, due to Skyguide's policy or letting one of the two scheduled controllers take an "extended break" during low traffic hours.

Pilots do NOT just suddenly decide to descend to 10,000 feet because "hey, we haven't heard from you for a minute". The reason both planes were at the same altitude and got close was because the controller was distracted and forgot to separate them. An altitude of 10K would be inappropriate anyway, as neither of them were anywhere close to making an approach for landing. But, hey, since they are changing the airlines, changing the flight numbers and changing the location, why not?

This didn't happen in Ohio (The airport is named "Mid-Ohio International, but probably meant to depict Columbus International or Hopkins International). It happened over Uberlingen, Germany, on the southern border.

Vitaly Kaloyev was accurately depicted as an architect, but he lost his wife and a son and a daughter, not just wife and daughter. And his daughter was not pregnant, she was much too young. This was added for dramatics.

There is no way in HELL that VK was present during the search for, and removal of bodies phase of the investigation. Dramatics again.

The amount of persecution PN received during the investigation seems to have been exaggerated a bit. Also for dramatics.

Who knows for sure yet, but the trailer seems to indicate VK and PN both had guns, and had them in preparation for the inevitable showdown between them. Is a shoot-out likely to be depicted? In reality VK showed PN a picture of his kids in coffins and tried to get an apology. Upon realizing an apology was not forthcoming, he stabbed PN. This all occured in PN's backyard, not at his front door.

Yeah, yeah. I know. "It's a movie". I know. It's not even a movie, it's a movie trailer. Incomplete and highly edited.

But, assuming there are many more instances of "dramatic licence" to come here, it's looking to be a catastrophe at least as bad as the accident which "inspired" it.

I agree with you but in other movies if we bring up facts then we are called racist. I.e. Hidden figures. Great info

The trailer never said based on true story. It said it's inspired by actual events. Basically they made their own movie based off that 2002 story.

Exactly. Inspired by real events != follows real events to a T.

Even if it does say 'based on a true story' it means just that, based on, which can mean anything from closely based to as loosely based as you can possibly imagine. It's really not much better than saying 'inspired by'

@longshott What you don't seem to get is that your original post is pointless - at no time is the movie claimed to be an accurate portrayal of events.

Maybe you got some things wrong as well? Unless the wikipedia page on Vitaly Kaloyev got it wrong too. Which is possible of course.

Soooo....... why write an extremely detailed post on how much is wrong and how terrible this "waste of time" is going to be? Lol I love it when people JUDGE a movie based on a two minute trailer. Most people don't know anything about the events that happened, nor care about STCA or even know that that's a thing that exists. If you're so concerned about the details then I suggest you go over to Peter Berg's page and post about how inaccurate his recent films are. Don't get so bent out of shape! Get happy, man, and as you said, "it's a movie."

My guess wold be because they are associated somehow with the airline, air traffic control, or the pilot and attempting to prevent any new exposure on the incident by trying to stop people from seeing the movie.....

I saw the Aircrash Investigation episode which covered this event and think I'll also give it a miss for the same reasons as you.

Just because a movie is 'inspired by true events' doesn't mean that it's ok, or right, for them to vilify or justify the actions of the people who are known to have been a part of the actual event. It appears, from the trailer, that they haven't just bent the truth a little, but instead are portraying almost the opposite.

If this is supposed to be a different story inspired by something that happened, then why so many similarities? 'Everest'was inspired/based on true events, because they didn't know all of the facts. For this movie, in my opinion, the producers have made their own judgement and 'inspired' is just way of covering themselves against lawsuits.

Besides, the main character, in real life, was understandably left an emotional, if not psychological, wreck after these events happened. When was the last time you saw Arnold Schwarzenegger show more than one emotion with his acting?

Which makes it a real shame that they're closing them down. Despite the flame wars and ''RHIS IS THE WORSTTT MOVIE EVER'' posts, there's a lot of gold here.

Besides trailers - which you usually have to watch a commercial first to see - what does this site really have that Wikipedia doesn't? I'm going to be checking it out a whole lot less once the boards are gone.

Exactly. I still read the trivia, but anymore I find myself just scanning through it. And I go to YouTube for the trailers, because the video player in the IMDb app plays really sketchy on my phone. So without these boards, I'll really only come to the site to see if there are any new movies/trailers, then jump ship to YouTube for the videos and Wikipedia for the info

Thanks to those who have supported the spirit of the OP.
We need not demand perfection in accuracy, but we should demand an effort, imho. Or at LEAST an effort to NOT deceive people through re-writing history.

One of my favorite Ben Franklin quotes speaks of people who trade security for safety deserving neither safety nor security.

I would add that, regarding movies made based on real events, people who are willing to trade accuracy for entertainment deserve neither accuracy nor entertainment.

Were you misquoting intentionally to make your point? The Ben Franklin quote is:

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
