Did Lucas have any redeeming qualities?

He was wrong about just about everything and a mean, unpleasant kid to boot.

reply

Well, he did provide the service of being the token black character

He also planted the idea in Eleven that she was a monster and responsible for what happened. As we came to discover he was way off base on both counts.

Lucas was bad news. Maybe the Demogorgon will have him for lunch in Season Two.

reply

He brought conflict within the group as was needed to make the kids story a little more interesting. It would seem the writers idea worked.

He was just jealous of Eleven because he was Mike's best friend and was worried about her getting in the way of their friendship. At first I thought Dustin was full of shit for telling Mike to apologize to Lucas but then I realized Dustin had a good point. Both sides were wrong in one way or another. Friends usually fight, But true friends always make up.

I remember Lucas grabbing Eleven but did he push her down as well? Anyway, how Lucas treated Eleven for most of the Season was completely uncool. Yes, having a conflict amongst the kids brings tension and, yes, Lucas did what he did out of jealously, a reaction a person can have when someone new joins a group you're a part of and monopolizes the attention of the group member you consider your best friend. And, I appreciate Lucas apologizing to Eleven, finally, near the end of Season One. Maybe Lucas will improve this season. I hope so. He has even less justification now than he did in Season One to borderline abuse Eleven the way he did.

What I would like to see is Eleven return and bond with Lucas more than any other character in the group this time; it would go a long way, I think, to redeeming Lucas.

No, he wasn't. Pretty good chance that El and the Monster are still going to be revealed as related entities. And he was the one who did the legwork on the Lab.

And he represents a different personality type, especially in contrast to Dustin ("Fireball!" vs ""Protection!")

He's angry, but not always. In S2 he's downright likeable.

reply

Good to hear.

He genuinely cared for Will and made it his priority to find him. No?

Yeah, his attitude towards Eleven made him very unlikeable. But since he saw the “weirdo” (which was enough reason for him not wanting to be around her) as a distraction that to his mind kept preventing him, Mike and Dustin from finding Will, I don’t find it hard to see why he became frustrated and standoffish with El. He was wrong either way.
