theres speculation WW84, Black Widow, Bond etc will go this route too (providing Mulan makes decent money)..although those movies are much more anticipated than Mulan
I remember few months back, Disney said there are no way Mulan will go straight to stream, because it cost too much to make.

For Mulan the max I'd pay is $10, about the same price as a regular movie ticket.

This is supposed to keep people on Disney+ subscription rather than just subscribing for a month for Hamilton, this, and some other stuff; and then quitting (although I'm told Netflix doesn't seem to have this problem :\ )
$30? Lol. That's 3x the price of a movie ticket. People will pirate this before paying such a price for a rental.
I can understand paying $30 for a Blu Ray or digital copy, but a rental? That's overkill.

HD copies of films don't usually leak until a few weeks or even months after the theatrical debut.
I can see a HD copy of this leaking the day of release, and Disney will lose tons of money as a result.
I just don't see a streaming/VOD option working out in the long run. Most of these kinds of films cost 100-200 million to produce, and streaming alone cannot generate such revenue.
A low budget flick that costs $20 million could likely succeed on streaming, but not a $200 million flick like this.
Netflix has the same problem: piracy. But they still spend 150 million on The Irishman and 6 Underground.
Money isn't the only issue here, the major benefit for them is increase subscriber on Disney+.
True, but Netflix doesn't charge $30 per rental to watch their movies. Just a single monthly subscription and that's it.
Disney wants people to subscribe to Disney+ AND pay an extra fee on top of that.
If this becomes the norm then streaming will cost way more than the theatre in the long run.
I really hope theatres survive this crisis. It's going to really suck if you have to pay such fees because theatres are closed down forever.
Not to mention the theatrical experience is much more enjoyable than watching a film on a tiny TV or tablet
Disney set their price higher than Netflix, might be the same reason you think this won't work: piracy.
The biggest market is China, Netflix has no market share in China, maybe that is why they are less concern piracy, can set price lower.
But Mulan is aim to China, they know there will be piracy, so they set the price higher.
Supposedly Tenet is coming out here on 9/3 now. I thought it would just get delayed again but then just a few days ago out theaters re-opened. I don't know where else in the country theaters are opening, but it made me feel like Tenet might actually hit that date now. We'll see.
