Budget: $290M (est)
Is that a record for Disney? Filmed last year in China, New Zealand and Australia.
shareIs that a record for Disney? Filmed last year in China, New Zealand and Australia.
shareHoly smokes. That's almost twice what they spent on Capt Marvel.
They must be hoping for another Beauty and the Beast.
Location shooting and costuming is expensive. Looks like Disney is "All-In" for this movie and they expect the Middle Kingdom to respond in kind. Disney's Mulan is a film that I absolutely adore, enjoyed and is criminally underrated. The musical numbers were memorable and catchy and I found the villain (Miguel Ferrer) absolutely menacing. The animated version never had a release in China so I would expect that maybe Disney would also resurrect that film for re-release? Who knows, maybe Mulan the animated version was insulting or too off-putting for Chinese audiences where the live version is intended to be more faithful.
This supposedly is a beloved story for China and Disney dare not mess this up. This in some ways is akin to Marvel throwing a love letter to Africa via the Black Panther. I'm excited for this movie regardless.
So the break even point will be in the 800 million neighborhood at least when you factor in the global marketing they must have planned. That could still be short if the bulk of its gross comes from China.
Yikes.
How do you know what the break even number is ?
shareDo you really think they won't spend AT LEAST 100 million on marketing a film that has a 290 million dollar production budget?
shareThat was my question, my question was , how do you know that's the break even number ?
shareBecause only someone as clueless as you would NOT KNOW that a film with a 290 million production budget needs to make that to break even. If China ends up being a huge share of that it will even be a HIGHER break even than 800 million.
shareCan you prove it ?
shareAccording to a 2012 memorandum of understanding that was ratified this fall, China allows only 34 foreign films into its cinemas each year on revenue-sharing terms, and Hollywood gets just 25 percent of its movies' box-office gross in China (40 to 50 percent is common in other territories around the world).share

How ironic queen saying im cluless when pretty much everything that comes out of your mouth is wrong each time , queen , you are clueless trust me , you embaress yourself with each post u make , you dont know how much this has to make to break even
shareHow do you know what the break even number is ?
^^
The real question is WHY does queen even bother Setting a break even point?
lol
first, It FAILS every time he tries it, Stunning he desperately tried the same exact thing with Both Aladdin and TS4 within in the span of 2 months and in both cases the films easily Met and surpassed his break even point resulting in Queen having to take the walk of shame and admit he was wrong
But Next Queen has Proved His "Break Even" Points mean nothing has sometimes He gets very Angry and Upset that a Disney film Passes his break even point, He then Immediately Moves the goal posts and sets A NEW GOAL....
also worth noting, Queens "Break Even Points" seem to have drastically different standards for different Studios...
example being Shazam and TS4....
Queen's Set a Break Even point for TS4 at 600 Million....but The specifically claimed "we'll then have to Wait and see how MUCH MORE TS4 makes over that to gauge if its a success"
so according to Queen, for Disney, a film not only has to hit his break even point, but also we then have to wait and see HOW MUCH MORE it makes before we can gauge if its a success or not
Yet, for Some Reason, A WB film Shazam has a completely different standard....Queen Set Shazam's Break Even point at 360 M.....Shazam hasnt made another cent past Queens break even point, Yet Queen has no problem calling it a Hit and defending its box office as A Success....For some reason, there is no "we have to wait and see how MUCH MORE it makes before we can gauge if its a success or not" for the WB film Shazam....
so again I say WHY on earth does queen even give "break Even" points?
1. They always fail and result in pure Embarrassment for him
2. When He gets really invested in Trolling a certain film, he'll disregard his own break even point If the film tops it and Just set a New GOAL
3. His Break Even Points have drastically different standards for Studios, which can only be called BIASED....
Its Quite astonishing that Queen even Still tries the "Break Even" Point trolling tactic when its failed on a near 100% basis....
I think at this point he's using it only as A tool to "Buy Time"
and what I mean is, Queen only goes to the "Break Even Point" tactic as his second or 3rd attempt at trolling, His 1st attempt at trolling always fail....
for example with Aladdin and TS4....He predicted both film to flop and Lose Disney Hundreds of Millions....but Both films Immediately opened HUGE and Queen Immediately knew both films had no chance of flopping and he was going to be wrong....
Queen had a choice to make, admit defeat now, and immediately take the walk of Shame....
Or Move the goal posts, changes troll tactics from his 1st FAILED attempt of claiming they were going to flop, to A New Trolling tactic of "setting a Break Even" point....
again the only reason to do this is to BUY TIME....Queen surely knew both film would easily meet and exceeded the break even points he set, but that not the point, By setting The "Break Even" points, It BUY HIM TIME....He gives him another week or 2 of trolling before the film hits the break even point and It buys him another week or 2 before having to take the walk of shame, admit he was wrong and start HIDING and Avoiding the boards....
I'm fully convinced, Queens ONLY purpose for setting "Break Even" points now is just to BUY TIME....

[–] QueenFanUSA (2759) 7 months agoDo you think that the virus plaguing "mostly" China will have an outsized impact on the Mulan release Box Office and will be the cover for why this film will flounder in China?

I agree...this is Disney's first box office disaster of 2020. I fear there are many more to come both this year and the next year.
So much for Disney "owning the box office".
[–] QueenFanUSA (2760) 29 minutes agoThe reference quote for the production budget for Mulan is the actress Gong Li in 2019. Wikipedia has estimated the Production Budget around $150 Million which for me matches the quality as seen through the trailers. Methinks Disney isn't even trying to correct or validate the amount that is out there as it generates free publicity for the film as a kind of grand exercise in satisfying China? 🤷♂️

With all that do$h there better be a singing dragon
shareThis film will probably be closer to the actual lore and NOT have a "Talking Dragon" that doesn't even flick its tongue.
It might not even have Shang as a love interest. That too was a story element that is not present in the mythology of Mulan.
I'm still very pleased that Disney is taking this approach for this China legend. Looking forward to seeing it.
One aspect of this film is that it might very well be the entry point for many in the Middle Kingdom into Disney+ if such an option is available in China. This way Disney can bypass that whole revenue percentage sharing with the China Boxoffice. Disney will be going direct to the China customer.
Correction!
History-Making $200 Million ‘Mulan’ Budget Didn’t Intimidate Niki Caro: ‘It Was Satisfying’
https://www.imdb.com/news/ni62813325?ref_=nwc_sb_nwc_li
When “Mulan” opens in theaters later this month, it will make history as the most expensive live-action film ever directed by a female filmmaker. The live-action Disney epic carries a budget of at least $200 million before marketing costs. At the center of that budget is Niki Caro, the New Zealand writer-director best known for Oscar-nominated dramas “Whale Rider” and “North Country.”
Well they're fucked.
