there's no obvious cgi in this movie though, it's not transphormers or something...

IMHO, there is a sequence of Jake Gyllenhaal under a grim, overcast screen, that was created in post- and green screen. The light and other visual elements in that sequence do seem strangely "off" - and since that sky was, IMHO, visually important, it was easier to use VFX than to wait for the right weather.

Well, Gyllenhaal and Adams were made to look younger in the flashbacks.

That must be due to CGI because there's no such thing as skillfully employed lighting, makeup or photography.

I thought the fat blobby monsters in the opening sequence were all CGI.

They're real grannies for the most part (not sure if they're all grannies)... Incredible visuals and the subject of much discussion that scene...
