From the opening credits I could barely look at the screen. Fat women dancing with sparklers is considered brilliant art. Balderdash!
Just before the rapes I stepped into the lobby because I thought I would throw up. I came back and mostly listened to this with my eyes closed. Every time I chose to watch some parts, I was sickened.
I don't know who the director made this for, except sadists who like to watch rape and killing (off-screen, mostly), but implied violence is sometimes more horrific inside one's own head.
The acting is great but I hated the thing from beginning to end. My stomach still hurts and I hope anyone who sees it finds it more entertaining than I did.

In another thread we were discussing some of these things. And I agree with some of what you said. But overall I think it was a good movie because I cared about the protagonist and I hated the villains. It made me think and it affected me. Most movies today I watch and leave and never think about them anymore. Sometimes I totally forget them. I just do not care. This movie, the acting, story and images roll around in my mind a lot. A lot of "what if's". The sign of a good movie is not always if you agree with it or it makes you feel good or feel comfortable. It's if it makes you care and if it makes you think. This movie had parts that made me angry, sad, laugh, horrified, disgusted, confused, etc etc. But I was never bored and that to me is a good movie. I will always remember it. Now is it a movie I will want to watch again. No. Once was enough. But I am not sorry I saw it.
I didn't like it either and I cannot recommend it. True, when a movie affects the viewer in a negative way, it has done its job even then. There are movies like "Straw Dogs" and "A Clockwork Orange" that depict rape in a way that feels organic and justified to serve the story and plot. This film failed on that score with me. Also the opening credits really were pointless and sick seemingly just for shock value. I will probably have nightmares.

Well the rape and murders were the novel writer's way of letting Amy Adams character know just what he felt like when he lost her and his child. How violated and betrayed he was and how he could never heal. I admit, they were very disturbing and I was uncomfortable and sickened. But that was the point, the writer was able to convey the devastation of his soul.
I will not defend the opening scene. That was just a gimmick to add some shock value. I heard laughing and ugly comments from the audience and all I could think of is how I would have felt sitting there if I was an obese woman. I feel it was a mistake and detracted from the film. But the movie as a whole is still a good movie with an interesting story, unforgettable characters and fine acting. Another sign of a good movie is when it stirs of a healthy debate and this movie has done so.
I have to disagree. The OP whining about being shocked by sexual assault in these days of parental advisories is pathetic. Ford showed the bare minimum in that area. As for the dancing ladies - I don't have a fetish for obese women but thought it an excellent choice for the film. They were arresting images which immediately got your attention. I interpreted them differently from Ford's explanation but think the idea worked on several levels. Bottom line - he's the artist and gets to choose - at least until Trump and his new AG start imposing censorship. If the OP is such a sensitive soul, he/she needs to do a little research before they go see a R rated film.
As soon as someone brings up Trump/politics to defend a movie or not, he/she has lost all credibility. This movie was a waste of time and was written/made well before the recent election. I voted for Trump so deal with it.

Since you've come here to grace us with your wisdom, perhaps you could explain how a pious sensitive soul like yourself, who is sickened by images of nudity and rape, can vote for the "I grab 'em by the pussy" candidate.
Well Republicans are moral, so that is why they voted for a guy who cheated on wives number 1 and 2. And while his current wife was pregnant he " tried to *beep* another man's wife really hard". He also admitted he once lusted after a 12 year old Paris Hilton and when he was 50 told a ten year old girl he would soon be dating her. He also advocated murdering the wives and children of our enemies. And using torture on prisoners that was outlawed by the Geneva convention ( even after the CIA has said that information obtained via torture was never useful since anyone will confess to anything if they are tortured ). And yes, he bragged about sexually assaulting women and being able to get away with it because he was a "star". And he was not just 'locker room talking' because several of his victims came forward to back up his bragging by relating their encounters. His own wife Ivanka said he angrily raped her over an argument about his "beautiful" head of hair. And that he kept copies of Hitler's speeches by his bedside because he was inspired by them.
That is why the supporters of Predator-In-Chief Trump are outraged and sickened by this dirty movie that may harm our country's morals.
Say it isn't so, fifthquartile - surely these are just vicious lies and fake news spread by the guttersnipe enemies of our 'dear leader'. As you surely know, these liberal film-makers, artists, immigrants and malcontents of all hues* are constantly slandering our glorious Fuhrer with their 'alternative facts'.
Well this is why I could not vote for Trump even though I was not a huge HRC lover and I do believe Trump's views on trade and free trade agreements were correct. I mean, sorry for the comparison but that would be like supporting Hitler because he helped the German economy. It is sad to think that if the Dems ran anyone else, like Bernie or Biden, I think they easily win. HRC just had too much baggage and years of right wing attacks ( most unfair, but ... ). Trump could not say Bernie ever supported free trade deals, but HRC and her husband had no defense of that. The midwest states HRC lost were states that Bernie had done well. IT is the midwest that has suffered the most from NAFTA and the "free" trade deals. I will be honest, I do not trust HRC. And its not the right wing media attacks, I know they are unfair hack jobs. She just did not inspire me. The way she and her husband gave speeches and took money from Wall Street showed me that she would not do what she needed to do to reign in the banksters abuses and greed at the expense of 90% of America. But I voted for her out of self defense. Trump just scares me. HRC would be business as usual, probably following the same path Obama took. But God knows what havoc this temperamental narcissistic egomaniac Trump will perpetuate on America. He already is attacking free speech and freedom of the press. Very much like his best buddy dictator Putin. The only good thing is I see decent Americans standing up and marching and fighting back. That is long overdue, people should have been marching about how the banksters and their free trade have screwed over America. I pray in the midterms these forces will change the face of congress so Trump will not have a rubber stamp on the carnage.
Well we all have different tastes. I found some things in the movie objectionable. But overall the story and acting was good. It kept my attention from start to finish. And I will always remember it and the characters. Sorry you did not like it. Even though I did I respect your opinion.
From the opening credits I could barely look at the screen. . . Every time I chose to watch some parts, I was sickened.
You poor delicate flower - Tom Ford should be thrown in jail for subjecting you to such horrors as naked Fat Women! I wonder how you manage to step out into the street - America is full of fat people. Some of them are even obese! Your stomach must hurt and you must want to throw up every time you go to the supermarket, right? It must be really tough being as sensitive as you.

The movie tried to tell us this in the first ten minutes. It was Susan's art installation. You obviously came late to the party.
Never mind about being on time - it's also crucial to be awake if you want to understand a film. Susan herself describes the art installation as 'junk' when somebody congratulates her on the show. What could that possibly mean? It means she's disillusioned with this kind of sensationalist art. In any case, this IS the kind of 'shock' art which plausibly gets attention and sells for high prices in her circles. If you're going to watch films outside the action/adventure category, it's important to be somewhat informed.

She said the opening went well, so apparently the majority thinks this is art.
You're obviously a bit of a country bumpkin, and have no idea how people behave at high end art galleries. Attendees at these events flatter the curator. In addition, Americans are particularly ignorant about art - they make flattering comments when they don't understand something.

Lame original post. No insight, comment of substance or anything intelligent to contribute. Just another insignificant, prudish nobody with a closed mind who understands nothing. It's people like you that are killing these message boards.
